Resident silvers off the pier in Port orchard
      #283188 - 04/01/07 09:41 PM

Fished for an hour off Harper pier and nailed the resident silvers with my mother of pearl spoons. Caught ten missed several. A real kick to watch these things hit. All fish released untouched and without flopping on the dock.

Looks to me like a couple of blackmouth shakers in the pics too, but that one silver looks pretty nice for a resident!

They all had a pretty dark lower jaw. But all had forked tails and white or grey gum lines. They were all silvers. at night I hit some blackmouth under the lights.

Its not the jaw, its the heavily spotted back on them and that pops out like a sore thumb to me! Ur first, fifth, and six pic are clearly blackmouth shakers, especially in that fifth pic, its clear because the fish as spots on the whole entire tail, a silver does not have them on the whole entire tail!

Sorry Guru but the occurrence of spots on the lower half of the tail is not always definitive as to Coho or Chinook. Neither is the spots on the back.

OMG, blackmouth are called blackmouth for just that reason THEY HAVE A BLACK MOUTH. No there not inbred they are juvenile silvers and like other species of fish they are not carbon copys of what they will look like when they are adults. may go fishing today and if I do I will take some really good pics to put this to sleep!

Spot patterns and locations are not always definitive for identification of chinook and coho even in their adult forms.

Chinook in the salt have a distint odor, not saying that all smell that way, but I've never caught any other salmon that has that odor. Since the picturs posted don't smell like Chinook, they must be silvers.

I'm with Quillback on this one, the pictures to me smell like a freshly opened can of Charlie Tuna, so I'm guessing coho.

I've caught some pretty nice blackmouth in my boat drifting about 30yds off the pier. The entire area up around Illahee and the passage have really good fishing. When all esle fails, grab the fly rod and go after cutthroat.

I know, its like they think they are like a deer fawn, "they'll loose there spots"! My grandfather used to do the samething until i made him look closer, oh, "oh shaker coho" he'd say! I'd quickly respond with "that ain't no coho, look, black mouth, black spots all down the tail, purple back when in the water"!

not gonna add my .02, but it looks fun, cool to see them ab spoons at work.
micro101, i got your pm and the only abs i would be able to get you in quanity are flats, they are smaller, but if you want some, i could get them to you without a prob, we just don't have enough reds to find empty shells, i have a couple 9-10 inchers i have harvested, but i don't get them in quanity.

Chinook have black mouths, Coho have grey or white gumlines, regardless of spots or color in the water!!

Why yes they do. I suspect Micro was landing and releasing them so fast he missed one or two. BFD. BTW it's legal to cnr either fish during the time period of the posted catch and release by Micro.
