Just found out that today (April 4'th) the AK Dept. of Fish and Game announced an Abundance Index level of 1.60 for Southeast. Under this level, there is a very good possibility that Charter anglers in Southeast will see a 4 fish (Chinook Salmon) yearly limit. Obviously, this does not include special take areas around hatcheries where limits may be higher. So Grizz, you can take people to go catch even more of those dark boot lookin' things you guys call Kings around Ketch. As for AkKings, Navigator, and myself, we'll enjoy nice bright fish that actually fight and don't swim straight to the boat begging for death. In a short amount of time, we should hear from ADFG on whether the limit will be 3 per year or 4 per year for non-Residents. Link is to the announcement. http://www.sitnews.us/0407news/040407/040407_chinook.html
From the Abundance Index: (d) When the king salmon abundance index is greater than 1.5, the commissioner shall, by emergency order, implement the following measures to attain a harvest of 17% of the annual harvest ceiling specified by the Pacific Salmon Commission, after the subtraction of commercial net harvest specified in 5 AAC 33.367 from the harvest ceiling:
(1) when there is a cumulative sport underage of 10,000 fish or more: (A) a resident bag limit of two king salmon; (B) a nonresident bag limit of one king salmon; and (C) a nonresident annual limit of four king salmon, 28 inches or more in length;
(2) when there is a cumulative sport overage or an underage of less than 10,000 fish (A) a resident bag limit of two king salmon; (B) a nonresident bag limit of one king salmon; and (C) a nonresident annual limit of three king salmon, 28 inches or more in length.

Not to worry Chris I will have the bright ones cleaned out before ya get there. I would try that waterfall place but they don't let poor people fish there.

"there is 13 and 9 of them are just as mint bright" And where are those mint bright fish laying? "i know the catch ratio at warren's is higher!" Really??????? Hmmm, interesting, I didn't know that the Ketchikan area was ever one of the main influences on the King Salmon retention and mortality ratio for ADFG. Guess that must be why ADFG is always watching area 2C. To make sure we allow more fish to pass through to you guys on the inside. Since your catch ratio is higher and all. I think maybe you should have said something more like, "I'll go fish with Warren, as ADFG took pity on us, by allowing us to catch the dark, spawned-out hatchery fish of Ketchikan. Maybe with alittle more practice, I'll be able to go play with the big boys on the outside of POW." Now this ought to get this post rolling.

Good morning Grizz, Glad to see you recognize our Kings with a capital "K", while those dark things you catch, get the smaller "k".

Be honest now, how many days can you expect 12 fish days? I'll bet the number is single digits, the rest of the season is scratch fishing, we get 2 solid months where boat limits are the rule not the exception. I've spent 5 seasons fishing out of K-town, I know what the fishing is like there. I guess if is your thing, K-town is the place to be.

Lets see.. I will be there 7 days x 12 fish = 84 FISH!! I would stay two months but what would I do with 672 FISH, Want me to ship you some of the extras?
Waterfall 4 verses Warrens 672... even chris has this figured out.

Don't count on it!
Again, you won't get 12 fish a day for 2 months, not in K-town, 2 weeks MAYBE??? and this is if you like fishing in a terminal area for half dead, mostly fish, enjoy,

This is getting quite funny. I've spent over 35 years fishing the Ketchikan area and it is nothing to have 12+ King days for a month to a month and a half. I'll take the 12 Kings per person any day over the 4 per year. The fish are mostly Chromers and thats 12 per day per person....Warren had some days last year that were 40 plus using the bobber meathod.....I guess we'll just have to suffer through another measly season and dream about the monsters??? on the outside.

What I want to see is 1 pic with a 2 person or more limit @ 12 fish a piece, as good as the K-town fishing is this shouldn't be a problem should it? I've got hundreds of pics like you've got in that link.

How bout that one u got in Tongass Jeff, nice Shortraker! Oh man, u mean, i gotta take a pictures of every fish just to satisfy a guide with an ego, geeze come on scott, this is the Guru ur talkin to, u want the A game, u got it!!! Look out warren, i'm puttin the tidewater float show on this year buddy! The only credit i myself will give u waterfaller's is the amount of substantially large fish u fellas get and u know what, good on ya, but i won't stand for this, my spot is better than ur spot attitude, each has its own ups and downs, ur bottom fishing for example is much much better, but the amount of Kings that Herring Cove hatchery gets is flat out awsome, the fishing is flat nuts, and no u don't have to snag and to say that they are all boots, get over urselves!

They don't call Ketchikan the King salmon capital of the world for nothing. I've heard that Waterfall is well known for being the HUMPY capital of southeast AK though so I guess you've got that going for ya.

So you bring in these big hauls (mostly chromers ) and nobody has ever wanted or thought about a shot of the "big catch" come on now, were fisherman here, I can't believe there isn't 1 shot of a big stringer of fish, "if" such a stringer really ever existed
Wait till this summer for pics you guys crack me up! just gives you more time to come up with more excuses.

I can think of a number of places that call themselves the "salmon capital of the world", pretty meaningless really. As for pinks, I had a great year on them last season, I only caught maybe a dozen of them. I've been told they make great halibut bait
BTW, are you related to CastawayChris, you bring a weak game just like him

"They don't call Ketchikan the King salmon capital of the world for nothing."
And who are "They"? I've always heard people refer to an unknown group as "They", but nobody really can tell me who "They" are. My opinion, they are just a bunch of self proclaimed experts, that live in every town, that thinks their s@#$ don't stink. So Jeff, if this is your best claim to fame for Ketchikan's salmon population? If so, you can keep it. It's kindda meaningless.
"I've heard that Waterfall is well known for being the HUMPY capital of southeast AK though so I guess you've got that going for ya"
Oh come on.....You must be a beginner at this
"Lets see.. I will be there 7 days x 12 fish = 84 FISH!!"
Damn Marty you better be rich! 84 Kings @ 20lb. ave (plus or minus)= approx. 840lbs of fillet product. Convert that into extra baggage fees with AK Air.......$1450 just in baggage fees!
Bottom line, do I wish we had a hatchery out on POW? YES! Do I look forward to when our first release Kings should return in 4 more years? YES! Then we can be just like Ketchikan and have a hatchery fishery where we can take our clients out to catch lots of non talent Kings. Then we all can look like heros everyday those fish are in.

Exactly............Then at least our "dock boys" will have all that slime and decaying flesh, that came off those hatchery fish, to scrub off the dock. While our "fish cutters", use a spoon to fillet those tender morsels you guys call Kings.
