North Coast info needed new
      #280256 - 03/06/07 01:09 AM

Hi. We will be staying in Seaside 3/24 - 3/31. I wanted to ask about fishing info for the general area. We want to fish on that monday, the 26th. We'd like to charter a salmon boat. How will the fishing be then? Should we go out on the salt or up in the mouth of the big C? Anyone here run a charter or guide service that would like to take a group? We'll have 5 for sure, and a possible 6th. Just looking to fill the freezer. Thanks.

Jake

Salmon season in the "salt" will be closed those dates and it's about a month early for springers. bottomfish in the ocean will be open.

Necanicum river in seaside is fishing good for steelies. Mostly natives this late in the season.
If your in a boat kloochie creek to the rock pit is a good drift. If bankin it stay above kloochie creek state park.
lots of room if you don't mind the hike.
check the water gauge on the n. fork nehalem should give you good idea for the necanicum.
good luck.

Head south to Tillamook, great bank fishing access on the Wilson river this time of year. You can get guided trips with Amermans Guide Service, they know this area well.

I second the Tilly area. There are a bunch of streams on the coast,Kilchis,Trask,Nestucca,Wilson, all worth a shot in late march, all have decent bank access, with the nod going to the tucca or wilson.Good luck.

Alright, sounds like lot sof options for a DIY trip. As this is yet another attempt at getting my first-ever steelhead, I want to use the best of the best as far as lures, baits, techniques, etc. goes. What color lures work well, spoons? bait? Jigs? Colors colors colors? Thanks, gents.

Jake,

you should do alright if the water has decent visibilty, and any of those techniques can produce your first. If you find some good bank access with woody debris, break out the hardware and use gold/brass or even black or dark green before light hits the water and after the sun goes off the water. I would switch the treble to a single 1/0 siwash hook tho.

Also try running a mag-wart or wiggle-wart in Dr Death or your favorite colors.

It would be hard to go wrong fishing with eggs or good sand shrimp/eggs to tempt a lunker into having breakfast.

Enjoy the trip!

I am here in Seaside now. Fished the Necanicum today. No luck. Saw a bucnh of Elk though. Local guy told me that the fish are not in right now. I found some good water and worked it long and hard, but nothing... which makes me want to believe the guy I talked to. It has been rainy and cold all week but is supposed to get better for wed and thurs. I'll try again I guess. Maybe I'll go down south to the Wislon or Trask. Anyone have info on where to go on foot?

i know the trask pretty good. i would fish the hatchery, which should have no pressure,,, and the dam hole, which i believe is at 7 mile marker or close, you will know it by seeing a big hole with a big pull out around 7 mile marker, they are on opposite sides of the river. there is alot of good water on that river and is producing well i have heard. i fished the nestucca system today with only 0one fish to show for it, so i wouldn't go that far.

I've caught Salmon, bass, sturgeon, all kinds of trout - and big ones. I've caught Dorado, Sailfish, jacks, even carp, catfish and suckers, rock fish, lings, crappie, bluegill, perch, and plenty of others. BUT for some reason the mighty steelhead CONTINUES to evade me.

I threw everything I had at them but no takers. Nobody else was catching anything either though, so I didnt feel so bad. I feel like I have enough of the "know-how" to get'er done, but I lack the actual experience, which means I need to log more time chasing the silver beast. The hunt continues.

jake, it has been tough this year, i have a fallback fishery luckily so i did pretty good, not as good as last year but still good. hopefully in the future you can venture a little closer to depoe and i have a day or two off. it was a dissapppointing march as far as it goes for the month, last year i was killing 2 chrome hatchery hens everyday at this time and releasing my share of others, this year i had to fish for wild fish to catch them, my time off and run timing didn't work this year for those nice brats, maybe next year!

Ifish,

How does the Depoe area look for springers right now? No telling exactly when we will be back to Depoe, but I'm 100% sure we'll be there this summer sometime. I usually charter a salmon boat because I really do not know the area. When the time comes I'll be scratching around for information and if things work out, maybe you can show me the fish. Thanks.

too early for springers right now, i will have 1 by the first of march i would guess, that's usually when you get your first few fish on the coast, steelhead is still your best bet, i'm pretty much done with winters though. summers will be happening may through august and again after the first fall rain, i pretty much fish year around. i don't like fishing the salt too much, that's where i work, i like fresh water on my days off, within an hour of here, there is usually a salmon or steelhead to catch. keep me posted, would love to get you into some fish.
