Decschutes Chinook
      #284248 - 04/09/07 10:06 AM

Most may have already seen this, but the Deschutes will open this year for Chinook. This from ODFW:

Fall Chinook Season to Open on Deschutes River Aug. 1

PORTLAND — Good runs of chinook salmon heading up the Deschutes River mean anglers may fish for the large salmon through Oct. 31.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife announced Monday that the river will open to fall chinook angling Thusday, Aug. 1. The river is open to angling for adipose fin-clipped spring chinook through July 31.

ODFW biologists estimate that 10,600 wild fall chinook will move up the Deschutes to spawning grounds, which exceeds the spawning escapement goal of 4,000 fish. The Deschutes opened to fall chinook angling in 1998-2000, but was closed 1992-97 and 2001.

Last year’s fall chinook escapement of 11,177 adults and 10,590 jacks represents a significant increase from the past several years. Jacks are immature males that migrate to freshwater. Jack numbers are closely tied to the following year’s adult return. The 2001 jack run was the second largest since 1977.

The temporary rule allows angling from the mouth at the I-84 bridge upstream to Sherars Falls for chinook from Aug. 1 — Oct. 31, 2002. The daily limit is two adult chinook or adipose fin-clipped steelhead, and five jacks. In addition, anglers may retain one additional adipose fin-clipped steelhead per day through Dec. 31 as per rules adopted earlier this year. Length limits and gear restrictions remain unchanged from those listed in the 2002 Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations.

Deschutes opens for springers april 15. Hopefully they dont close it early. Usually runs to july 31.

Jake, I like fishing the fall run alot more than the spring.
The spring run is combat fishing at its finest. Hardly any pressure in the fall. and only a few guys fishing for steelies. Late sept. is when we head down there. Caught a bunch last year out of big eddy.

Camo we should round up the crew and head down there. Doesn't look like we'll be getting a springer season in Idaho anyway.

Scud,

You say you caught steelies out of big eddie? I'm curious... when you say big eddie, I think of the popular series of rapids just outside of Bend called Big Eddie. Are we thinking of the same big eddie? If so, I did not think that the fish got that high - in fact I'm sure they dont. Thats the middle deshutes... over 50 miles from the dam the fish dont get around. Its got to be a coincidence..? Speaking of the dam.... 2010 was the projection for the completion of a complex system that would create a solid current in Lake Billy Chinook, making it possible for salmon and steelhead to find their way into the streams (Crooked, Middle Deschutes, and Metolius). Have not heard how the progress is going, but I did hear that, rather than building fish ladders into an already existing structure, they want to truck the fish around. Anyone know more about this?

Yes, it's supposed to happen.

I think the idea is to train the fish to be able to drive themselves around the dam without human help. This should keep the runs arriving at approximately the same time every year now regardless of water conditions. It is much easier for the fish to drive rather than swim, and also eliminates the fatigue of upriver swimming.

This should also help keep the fish in better condition to really lay the smack down on you Jake when you do hook into that monster steelie! Maybe you should increase your main line and leader to 20# test minimum?

As long as gas is <$3/gallon ODFW said this was a good waste of money.

Big eddy is the first hole below sherars fall on the east side of the river.
