Better be a high speed camera, so Grizz can get a shot of you fighting it before you give it the Sequim twitch and loss the damn thing.

Honestly, I don't doubt that for a second, I can only remember a few locals that impressed me.
Thanks but I'll have to decline on that offer, I really do know which grass is greener.
The greener grass must be in your pipe, and the part about locals not impressing you was really good. that must have been a three or four bowl per day year. I've fished a lot of Kings over the years and all the methods have there time and place and they all produce. Depends on a lot of variables. I know a lot of local that catch one heck of a lot of fish. So you can live in your little "green" world and enjoy your "4" fish per year limit. I'm sure glad I've got the Guru to talk to maybe you could hold some classes in hwo to catch a king here in poor old broken down, don't know how to fish, Ketchikan since you are the Professor with a degree in BS.

I'm not saying they don't catch fish, just from what I saw (15 years ago) all the locals ever did and seemed to know how to do was troll downriggers, not that there is anything wrong with that, its a very productive way to fish, most of the time. My take on it, most locals have such good fishing that they can get by only specializing in 1 technique (downriggers) and most are pretty good at it, no need to learn anything else, if they don't catch anything, well the fish just weren't biting that day. I think guys that fish Wa./Or./N Cal for salmon where the fishing generally doesn't compare to Alaska have to learn and be proficient at more techniques, trolling, mooching, jigging etc. to consistantly produce, by the time I started fishing in Ak. at 23 years old I would consider myself quite proficient at all of those, does that make me a better fisherman, maybe, maybe not, but it sure gives me alot more options which IMO has got to be a good thing. Just my $.02 worth.
Maybe since I've left things have changed but I would have to believe if I showed up at Survey Pt or Mt. Pt or any of the big name local spots and started mooching (my preferred method) all the trollers would be telling me to get out of there way, which I would as soon as I netted my fish

I too have to agree here lol!!!! Yes scott the locals were just trolling downriggers from what i saw and they weren't that productive most of the time! I think i tried more methods from the beach than any of them boats did! In fact, from the beach no body there knows how to fish any other way than snag and with cove being sooo small and the boundaries restricted to the outside of the green rocks, when the snaggers come in force u can't even begin to try and fish ethically, so if u can't beat them(and there was no way too when i was there on most days), join em!!! So, i went home with my fish, but man, i can't wait to fish em with floats or hardware this year at lowtide when no one is there!

Another good place to watch the talented local fishermen is Ketchikan creek in the spring when the steelhead are there, full speed snagging at its finest, I rented a house 1 spring/summer right by the library, watching the local steelhead "fishermen" was comical.

Don't know how the fishing is there now but it was pretty damn good then, April & May, best time was a couple hours before high slack until the tide started to turn, then it would shut off, fish were flushing in and out with the tide. all the usual gear worked just don't bring any bait with you! another couple places worth checking out are Ward creek and White river (needed a key to drive thru the gate) we didn't get as many but they were nicer fish from what I remember (17 years ago) If you really want to have some fun take a boat upto Yes Bay and hike up MacDonald creek with either a fly rod or spinning gear, not a bad idea to pack heat, thats brownie country. Good all summer long. Naha river was also fun but I always ran into other hikers/fisherman there, prefer a little more solitude. You should check some of these places out on future trips.

Summertime is also a good time to hit these for trout (generally not 8-10" planters either) and returning salmon, had some awesome cnr days on MacDonald for silvers and sockeye.

I'm Just bustin your chops, Wolverine Creek is an awesome place to fish for trout, steelhead, sockeye, coho, etc. Easy to get to and a lot of fish. One of the better streams around here to fish.

That fish is huge. It's only 2 inches longer than mine but almost 25 lbs heavier. 2700 ft is a long way down though. Thanks
