TERM DEFINITION BAIT DIVER A diving device that uses the river's current to dive the bait to the bottom. A large crank bait can be used. BOON DOG Cast directly upstream from a boat. Use the least amount of weight possible, keeping your line above the boat, and tight at all times as the boat drifts downstream. FLAT FISH A crescent shaped plug that dives up to 20 ft. It is used for larger species of salmon. Worden's makes it. DEEP SIX A diving device that is trolled to bring the bait to the desired depth. DOWN RIGGER A lead ball that weighs 10 lbs. or more and is attached to a cable. The fishing line is attached to a clip and the down rigger is lowered to the desired depth. DREDGER Fish in deep swift river current, using 1-2 oz. lead. GLOW BUG A single imitation salmon egg made from yarn. HOT SHOT A small crank bait that will dive up to 8 feet. Lure Jensen makes it. JIG A lure that is usually tied with marabou feathers. It is available in 1/2 - 3/4 oz. round lead heads. It can be fished with or without a peg float. KWIKFISH A crescent shaped plug that will dive up to 20 feet. It is used for larger species of salmon. Lure Jensen makes it. MAG WART This plug dives deep up to 20 feet for stained water or deeper rivers and it is also used as a bait diver. MOOCHER Drift or slow troll. Use 5-7 foot leaders and 1-6 oz. of lead. Fish with herring or anchovies, cut plug or straight. NOODLE ROD A rod that has soft action and is light in power. Use very light line. The rods' softness prevents even large fish from being able to break light line. PEG FLOAT (BOBBER) Used as a strike indicator. The float stays in a fixed position. PLUGGING It is also known as back trolling. Fish with plugs (crank baits) and let them out behind the boat up to 100 feet. Use the current to bring the lures to the bottom. PLUNKER Fish from the bank. Use enough weight to sink to the bottom and not drift. Usually you should fish with bait like eggs, shrimp, and spin glows. SIDE DRIFT Casting is usually done from a boat. Use the least amount of weight possible, drift with your line at 45-degree angle from the side of the boat. SLINKY Lead balls put into hollow nylon chord. It is used as weight for drifting. SLIP FLOAT (BOBBER) Used as a strike indicator. The float slides to the float stop. SPINNER A lure that is usually 2-5 blade size, that weighs up to 3/4 oz. It is reeled in at the necessary speed to make the blades spin. SPOON A lure fished in all water conditions. It is shaped like a spoon. TAD PULLEY A crank bait that will dive up to 12 feet. WIGGLE WART A small crank bait that will dive up to 12 feet.

I just finished a Lake Trout (Mackinaw) tournament on Flathead Lake, MT. We jig for lakers in 150-200 feet, with jigs that weigh 1/2-2 oz. Most of the laker jigs are probably in the 1-2 oz range. These fish pick up mostly on the drop when jigging, and they aren't hard biters. Need a rod that can handle the jig weight and have the sensitivity to deal with a soft bite on basically a slack line, using super braid. Thanks.

Alan, a ST1025 should suit that need just fine or if ur not super abusive on ur jig stick a HS1023 or HS1025 should do it! All three of these should be dandy sticks for Mackinaw jiggers! I'll see what else i can come up with to solve the equation!

Length is optional. I'm using 8'6" right now. I use a 30# his vis super braid, with about 4-6' of 10# maxima leader. I use the hi-vis because I can often detect a bite as the jig is falling toward the bottom, before it even hits for the first time. I'm just looking for something with the backbone to handle the 1-2oz jig and the sensitivity to pick up slack line bites. Currently using a Clarus and an HMX Fenwick.

The Hot shot HS1021 is what you are asking for but I think that you may have a problem breaking the 10# on the set because of the butt power your wanting and using braid, have you ever had a problem like that before with the rods your using now? 4'-6' leaders should help a bit from breaking the 10# just wondering.

I've never broken off on a hook set. When you set, these fish typically come up pretty quick. Getting slack out is the challenge. I was looking at the specs and the HS 1023 looks pretty good, too. The rods I'm using are rated 3/8-1 oz and the jigs are just overpowering them.

Chris, looks like a HS1021 or HS 1023 would work. What would one cost?

you wont feel under gunned with the HS series blanks and if your using 10# go with the 1021.Keep in mind they are prone to breakage if you high stick with a load on it.

Karry, how about an oversize rod that can lift a VW Bug, but has a tip so sensitive you can see a trout bite? Most of the sturgeon we get in the cooler months (and many in the summer too) hit like little trout. I'm looking for a 8 to 9 foot rod. Any idears? Graphite handle, spiral wrap?

Tuff one but I have a new glass graphite composite called the RCLB I would recomend the RCLB80L... it has a .930 butt so tons of lower power with a 7.5 E-glass tip, not solid glass like ugly sticks. the 15-30# is rated because of the mid break spot so as long as you keep the majority of the load on the lower end of the blank which means no High sticking you will have pleanty of power. These were tested on Yellow fin Tuna and the lower lifting power was amazing. The RCLM80M 20-50# may have too stiff of tip to detect the smaller bight so I would sacrafice the extra power for the softer tip for sure.

Ok, Joe, i've come up with a few possibles! First u have the SU1209 20-60lb test mod/fast action, next u got a SWB80XH Mod/fast action 20-50lb class, and then u got the RCLB80M Xtra fast 20-50lb class! These are u big boys that are gonna be the most senstive for if u went with the tuff stick series ur sensitivity is gone with the broom sicks they are and they are short except for the 9 footer that are 8-20lb and in that case ur undergunned! With these rods, I still believe u might be a little undergunned, but see what Karry says about it! On that Reservoir i'm thinkin that maybe there is not much current and u can chase them quite a bit so u might just be in the money with one of these! Woven Graphite handle and Spiral wrapped, yeah u might just have something goin there!

Chris, the rods I'm looking to get are for fishing the river out of an anchored boat, not in the lake. Water is hauling butt down there, because it is right below the dam. Good thoughts though.
I like Karry's idea. PM on the way...
