My buddy NoLuck and I have been hitting Sekiu the last two years but it was a bust last year. We want to try something new like the Umpqua or Roque this year in October but know nothing of either place. Any suggestions? We want to fish the salt/river transition areas and I have a 17' SuperVee sled. Any help would be appreciated. Maybe a good guide to help us get started.

hmmmm, if you wanted to fish central coast, like the siletz, i would have a ton of info for you, i think october is getting a little late for rogue tidewater, i'm trying to think back to the last month i worked there in gold beach, it was sept or oct, and it was winding down, if you are maybe intrested in the siletz, tell me, i know good guides, and i know how to, i just don't fish south coast, i work there.

I would select the Umpqua because its home for me and there should be decent fishing. Silvers have been pretty respectable of late, including a 23# buck featured in the local paper. Reedsport is a decent bet for hotels or campgrouds w/hookups. Plus it's close to salt/fresh zone.

The Umpqua is pretty decent from the 101 bridge down ,I fish out of Winchester 60 + days a year, usually fish the Pacific early and then switch over to the river later in the season or when bar conditions don't permit passage. as Tony says, lots of Silvers and a decent run of large Chinook. it's usually the hottest through September into the first week or so of October. cut plug herring is the preferred method for Chinook with that or spinners the preferred method for Silvers. my avatar is a 42# Chinook taken on the Umpqua just below the 101 bridge.

Thanks for the info. I will be elk hunting the 3rd week of Sept and we are flexible after that. It would be great to hit a time when both silvers and kings are present. We could also try a couple of places along the coast for some variety. Love to pull cut plug.

Don't have to draw for a general season archery tag. You do have to select a zone and hunt there. The two zones I hunt are comprised of 4 units each. Deer are by regular tag or whitetail tag and I can hunt much of the state.

I guess if I had looked into the regs I would have noticed the date was in general archery season
Just pay attention to the regs closely, I remember the season used to be divided by east/west of I-5 for a week.
Good luck on the

That east/west divide was for deer season, not elk.

I know he's from Idaho, but I'll still give him info
I guess it doesn't matter then if he's hunting in Idaho, but his post didn't give that impression.

Tony, out of state fishing liscense cost enough. A hunting liscense/tag is a little steep for my pocket. I just can't seem to find any saltwater in Idaho so I enjoy my short little time out west. I can't complain about the hunting in Idaho tho. Sorry about being a little vague on the elk hunting.

I hear ya on the out of state costs...elk tag and fishing license/tag every year is expensive as a non-resident, but I know every year I will buy one, so I budget for it and make it happen. I can't wait for the day when I can buy a resident tag again...
Best of luck when you get to the salt
