i was wondering if one of those boga grips with a scale would be hard on a steelhead to accurately measure it's weight, are they ok to use or hard on the fish, an opinions are appreciated........i'm talking wild fish that i intend on releasing un harmed.

I vote against the boca on released fish.. just grab a tape measure.

Agreed. Chances are that on any fish you would want to weigh, the grip would damage the fishes jaw and puncture their soft tissue behind their teeth.

thanks for the imput, i was leaning towards what you guys are thinking, marty, i won't put a nate in a net, once they are in the river, i think the slime loss is very hard on them, i saw a 37 inch buck the other day that was still alive but barely, he had fungus coverirng his whole body and he was not too dark, nor spent, further examination showed a hook rip in his jaw, i suspect he was in a net and suffered slime loss which made him vulnerable to bacteria, just my theory, but regardless, i don't even own a net. i will just enjoy the fish i catch and call it good. i got my best ever steelhead this year, i taped his length and got 39 once and 40.5 the second try, i didn't want to detain him any longer so i just enjoyed him and released him, i'm not sure how big he was but his girth was amazing, i was just happy to touch such a steelhead, anyhow, i was just exloring my options and agree the boga grip seems a little harsh, i was just looking for a little common confirmation, thanks!

not a big fan of the net either. They do make rubber nets, but thats a option I wouldn't use personally.

I use a boga all the time. They are great for controlling a fish boat side for hook removal. A quick lift and you have the weight and then release. I would contend more harm could be done trying to measure a fish as I think it probably takes longer. I'd say the hook buried in the the fish's jaw you just landed does far more harm then the boga.
Just my opinion.

I have heard that using the boga to weigh a fish can damage the fish's spine (may have read that on this site or in a magazine actually). Apparently holding the fish vertically by the head/mouth lets the weight of the fish hang on the spine and dislocates/displaces vertebrae. These are creatures who spend their lives suspended in water and are not used to, nor built for, the weight of their own bodies hanging with no support like that. As far as the net issue goes, a buddy of mine won't use anything besides a rubber net. Claimes they are easier on the fish, presumably becasue of the slime issue. Does anyone use those nitrile exam gloves, or "tailing gloves" to land fish?

Boga's are fine. No sudden jerks though. They do work relly well, Denali know as I have had to use his a time or 2.

jake, i wear nitriles all the time when fishing, not much slime seems to stick to them, i don't wear them when it's cold though, they make it worse. thanks everyone for the input, i have also heard it's tough on a fish to support it by the jaw, that was part of the foundation of my post.

I don't use a boga unless I'm pursuing something like a vicious guppy.  If I plan to release the fish, just a tape or string measurement will do. All the weighed fish  don't seem to have an opinion on the bogas. 
I like the gloves when using saucy scented baits, but definitely not a fan in the cold weather.

btw,the purple nitriles are the best, they are the toughest and least brittle, the pro cure black ones are good but way over priced, boraked eggs get messy too, the eggs get so firm, they pop when i cut them and that mixes with the exterior boax when baiting up and accumulated to a quarter inch on the hands in no time without gloves, as for scent scent control, i don't think they make a difference.

I also use 'em when gassing the sled. I think gas smell stay on the hands a lot longer than any other, and even when washed with soap won't completely come off. Also it is way unnatural for fish to smell that smell in most waterways.

We have medical type nitrile gloves we use here on the unit, but how do they differ from the ones sold specifically to fishermen? Same stuff I'd imagine, just marked up in price maybe?

We use Blue Nitriles at work and they are super thick, much thicker than the purples!!!

jake, it is just a price mark up, the ones i wear are medical as well. chris, i have seen those, they are the ones that are darker than the normal blue ones? i wonder how they would be to fish in

I've used the blue ones from the auto parts store (Carquest) and they hold up doing oil changes ect. I haven't used them fishing yet but have some in the tackle box. I think Harbor Frieght has them in small boxes of 12.
