Hey, just a quick question. I've seen different styles used when epoxying baitcasters or two foot eyes. Either they just epoxy the threaded area, or they epoxy both threaded areas and the exposed area between the thread directly underneath the guide. Any benefits from doing either way? Seems like doing the whole thing might be a bit stronger, but I don't know if having a large section of epoxy messes with the action of flex of the rod???

Well sure it will mess with it! More weight is added and is gonna soften the rod up! Not necessary, those people are just doin it because they suck at finish coating and they don't know how to seel the Guide up correctly!

Then how do you seal the guide up correctly. I have always just done the first coat doing just the thread and the go over the entire area with a real light coat. I have never been able to completely seal the guide without doing it this way. What's the trick?

What are you trying to seal under the guide? If you have a underwrap i can see it otherwise I gonna side with castaway on just coating the thread. The epoxy should flow to any spot that needs sealing.

I alway's do 2 coats. First is a real light coat, just enough to seal the thread, then when I start the second coat, I use a dental pick to put a drop of finish in the tunnel on each side of the guide foot, then apply finish as normal.
Chris is right, more finish equals more weight, slower action, less sensitivity so less is better on a steelhead/salmon rod.

I just use one coat epoxy.. never seen the need to apply a first coat. Just use a thread that is rated to not need color preserver.

Most of the time I use just one coat but if I'm not using CP I will do it with two coats. The first coat soaks up through the thread with a light coat after it sets then cover coat.
I also cut my brush's on a 45 so I have the wide edge for the field and the point for the tight spots.

Not much I can add hear all good responses. I do recomend two light coats gives you full coverage without a foot ball look and does help you fill the "Tunnels" under the guide foot without adding too much finish. I can do a one coat pretty darn good though and I doubt you would be unhappy with it. Color preserver or NCP thread makes it harder to fill the tunnels because the finish does not want to bleed through it.Thats were these other recomandation work well but I crimp my brush so it flars flat so I have a nice edge point to add finish in the tunnels as needed. If you dont fill the tunnels then you will see the finish crack at the top edge of the guide foot and in time you will have a loose guide because all kind of junk can work its way into there not to mention corrision,but will take some time for that to happen.
