Filet Help

Fileting fish... particularly kokanee. Is there an easy way to get a good filet off a kokanee without getting all the little bones? How do you do it?

Thanks

Jake

sharp knife and patience...I can't do it cause I don't have the patience...I just wack the fillet off rib bones and all...if it's a big fish, knife down the back bone and work the blade along the ribs to get the lower half off...that simple.

Cut the lateral line and filet towards the back and then filet the ribs if ya want...depends on how big the fish is.

That's how I do my bigger fish Jim...nice, easy and no waste...Tony, I agree with you, pan size fish get the head cut off and cooked whole...the bones peel out nicely.

Sorry guys, didn't mean to post this in the AK forum. THought it was in OR. Oh well. Thanks for the tips. I practiced on four more fresh fish today. Biggest 15, but I managed to filet them all out ok... kinda ratty and hacked up, but no matter. They hit the smoke in the morning. Thanks again for all the help and tips.

Jake, since you got the location mixed up [AK vs OR], ya sure yer not in Idaho, cause I'd sure like to know where you're catching 15" kokes.

15 incher was the second day. My first day it was a 16/17 incher. This is at Wickiup Res. in Central Or. Average Koke out there is about 12 - 13 (accept for the new planters). Some nice kokes for sure. Last summer I hooked into a koke that made several jumps. Everyone in the boat's jaw dropped wide open. Had to have been close to 18 inches. On his third jump he kindly sent my spoon back at my face. I seem to remember another one that day breaking me off - no kidd'n. Come on out to OR. I've seen big kokes in ID though. Fished Henry's Fork near Cofee Pot when the spawners were in there. Some big'ns.... but spawners. Henry's lake should have'm big, right?

Not so much on the big kokes at Henry's Lake. Island Park had some a few years ago, but that fishery dried up. The best spots for BIG kokes around here are Arrowrock and Lucky Peak. Few and far between, but definitley available. I've caught 16-18 inch kokes at Arrowrock enough to consider it go-to for big ones.

My brother has been catching Kok's up to 18 inches in lucky peak over the last month. Some of the biggest Kokes I have ever seen, and I have been sampling Koks for Idaho fish and game for the last 3 summers. hit the lake early in the morning and get off before the freaking masses get there to ski and wakeboard!

Nice. Thats a good report to hear. My inlaws live in Boise. I'll have to tow the boat out the next time I am over that way. Lucky Peak is pretty close to town, isnt it? I just read a report from ODFW on the lake I have been fishing. Two separate reports of 20 inch kokes came out of there since the opener (last sat).

Camo, sounds like a fun job. Pay well? Need help? We are considering a move to ID.

Jake
