Worms in Sea Bass Fillets ??
      #288239 - 05/07/07 09:53 AM

Got back from Neah Bay last night and was putting up my bass fillets for freezing and noticed some small curled up worm looking things in a couple fillets. I dug a couple out, they looked pretty nasty. But I didn't know if it harmed the meat or not. It's not like the meat was loaded with them, only a couple fillets had the worms and there were only two or three. Just wondering if those worms will cause any sickness? I don't really give a damn if there are a couple worms in a large bass fillet, I'll just dig them out if they aren't harmful.

BTW, fishing was great, we hammered the sea bass. I came home with six gallon bags of bass fillets in four days of fishing. My uncle caught a nate steelhead in front of Sail Rock on a swim shad lure, talk about a beautiful fish. It was about a six pound hen, quite a surprise to set the hook and have a chrome rocket explode out of the water while bass fishing. Was going to take a picture but the fish would was not photogenic, she busted the line as we were preparing to release her next to the boat.

We don’t get very many of those but we do get some. We have never had any in any type of fish other then butts, until two trips ago we had some of those same ones in some of the bigger greenlings, but only two or three. We just flick them out with the knife and they are fine. I'm pretty sure they don’t cause any sickness. Back when I worked at my restaurant I would find them in some of the cod that I got from AK. Only a few but I just dug them out and moved on.

Luke if the fillet crawls across the table I wouldn't keep it otherwise the worms are just extra protein.

See those all the time in late-season surf perch...harmless, once they're flicked out. I believe they're nematodes. Easy to find in the translucent white meats. Makes me wonder how many get eaten in darker fleshed fish...

Thanks for the info guys, I didn't think they'd be harmful, but just wanted some reinforcement. I know worms are protein as well. I just won't tell my wife about them, I'd hate to turn her off to fish because she really enjoys it.

good call. i see alot later in the summer in the large blacks and kelp greenling mainly, i have seen them in cabby's and lings too, i often wondered what the parasites that yelloweyes and sometimes blacks carry, it is a big white pod with black liquid on the inside, it's always in the belly cavity, normally right inside the vent, but sometimes between the pec fins.
