I just got a fish mount replica back and its good except I hate the paint job and to make a long story short. How do I repaint it? First, how do I remove the layers of lacquer or varnish or whatever it is and then do I remove the paint or can I paint over it?

I take it you are not going back to the Taxidermist. I would have expressed my displeasure immediatley with him and have him re-do it. If that isn't going to happen, or you just want to do the air-brush work yourself, I'd suggest painting over it. I would remember that less is more when painting a fish (especially over old paint). The thinner the layers the better. Removing the paint would ruin the replica.

You can't really make that story "short". If it's a replica then what you paid the taxidermist for is mostly the paint job. If you don't like it, especially if it doesn't look like the pictures you supplied him (you did supply pics, right?) then I'd take it up with him. If you don't have extensive experience with air brushing and mixing colors you'd probably end up making it look worse.

I did supply pics and now it looks like a giant lure. Anyhow, I do have some experience with a paint brush and air brush. I guess I should have just done it myself in the first place (hind sight is always 20/20) But I was busy with work and I had seen his work before and it looked really good and I figured that he was a professional. I am pretty sure that nothing could make this look any worse. This taxidermist was in another state, and I did complain about it and best I could get was that it could cost me half price, so I only paid the deposit. So about the paint. It would seem logical to remove the varnish layer at least, wouldn't it?

Oh yeah I forgot you are an artist. From what I've seen of your work I'd say you definitely should have done it yourself!

I'd recommend removing the paint with Laquer thinner. Most Repro fish are done with Laquer based paint.
