my best ever custom rod, went to cr@p!
      #288750 - 05/10/07 12:09 AM

well this is the update to my harrington rod search. there are none.... thanks so much to Harry in his assistance with recommending a lamiglass fiberglass blank for my buddy.

cut to the chase, he went to anglers and got what he needed. trust me, not enough. he also handed me a bag of embroidery thread and mystery threads and said, i want all these colors(threads) used. keep in mind these were bought at Micheals craft store! i told him to go to homies depot to get the rope he wants for the handle. he shows up with no rope cause homies depot didn't have the blue/black rope. he then gives me cash to purchase dyes and rope.

things go very well, got the rope and dye and make blue/black rope.

do all the gold thread under layment for all 9 guides. easy. put on all guides with royal blue thread. easy. trim w/metallic black embroidry thread. grrrr!

wrap both royal blue and black rope handle, set reel seat. rope fore grip. tough but got er'done. things look actually very sharp. take pics cause this rod is looking very sharp.

now to tackle his requisted multi color butt wrap. this brewer has never attempted. but things go well. color preserve and put 1st coat of clear coat on all thread. DAM LOOKS VERY GOOD! 99% finished. now keep in mind that 95% of this rod has been put together after working a swing shift and harbouring a buzz of many different boozes, good buzz is my motto to doing a decent custom rod. every morning i'd wonder out to see if things actually looked as good as when i finally crashed. and yes it was good the brewer said unto himself. now follow me to the 2nd and final clear coat.

before we go there let brewer faze in a more ruthless plot to the rod story. brewer has now spawned two sons in the last 3 years. microbrew being the 1st is a gem of a 3 year old boy. macrobrew the now 14 month old is proving to be the polar opposite of the macro in every facet. he is the curse that every parent puts onto thier children... " i hope you have one kid just like yourself when you have kids" lord knows i now have that kid. macrobrew eats handfulls of sand from the sandbox! he relishes it! i've given up on keeping it from him while plays outside. i'm dumb founed as he shovels it in.... i came home from work last night to find a note on his bedroom door. "babyman has bad rash on his buttom, use butt spackle please. here brewer knows thats not buttrash thats sandburn!!! flash forward 9hrs. wensday morning.

things are going very well am thinking my contact will pick up the rod this afternoon. macrobrew is watching a thing on PBS, say sesame street. macrow is out in garage with me trashing the place but all in all quite. there is where my gamble shoots brewer in arse! i chuck up the rod to a brewer made rotisserie drill, thing. all is peacefull. i began to mix hardners..... then the blood curtling scream boils from the macrobrew!!! i look and continue to mix! he's fine but is taking a morning sandy dump in his diaper and by the breaking of my eardrums it hurts!!! the epoxy is now clicking down, i Rush to get the eyes of the now nearly finished custom rod. the screams of sand blasted burning cr@p are everywhere! all i think of was get the ticking epoxy on and turn the rod and change burning fiery diaper!! but tears and screams prove to much!! i drop the brush and epoxy and run macro to bedroom and change the sandpit diaper amongst tears, snot and saliva!!! slap on a more than liberaral amount of butt spackle and seal a fresh diaper on the roasting red bunns! throw macro into crib and dash to garage to find the epoxy stiff and gloopy hard! 5 of the 9 eyes now look like sandy crap!!!

whats my options to fix the hardened goops?

please help!

i now know macro did this on purpose! i love that boy to death but he is proving to be too much for brewer!!!

sand on the rod? if its drips you can carefully cut the epoxy away with a razor blade. Carefully sand with some 220 or finer grit and recoat. If you get some fuzz from the threads use a burner to torch them off. Nice thing about the epoxy stuff is it will gloss up those mistakes and make them invisible if you remove error. I have done this with rods that have slipped from the chuck when turning.

I would also tape around the areas your sanding so you don't scrape up the blank

ok guys i will attempt what marty suggested. let mask this now, i've used up all the very good clear coat hardner. all i got left is hardware clear finish epoxy. its very thick. can gasoline or isopropyl alchohol be used to delute it down to a more workable consistancy? if not i'm screwed!

I would not try to alter the expoxy finish material. Just carefully cut the excess off.

Chris I did that on my first spey blank from cabelas I built. Similar issue as what happened to you the other day for sure. Sold it to Ben from the site, who moved away and I havent seen in several years now. Ben you out there?

If you have a alcohol burner it will flow the epoxy so it can be thinner after application. When you reapply just use a light coat if and if you have issues with thickness or bubbles break out the burner. I dont recommend trying this with a lighter.

The Brewer,
I would not use regular epoxy that is designed as an adhesive on your guide wraps if you wqant it to look decent. The epoxy that is designed for guide wraps is an entirely different formulation and thinning regular epoxy will not change the formulation or its characteristics. Also adding heat will just make it harden faster. Regular epoxy will not flow properly, will not be clear and will be full of bubbles. I would call someone like Angler's Workshop and they can ship you epoxy that is designed to go on guides, Flex Coat or Threadmaster and have it to you in a couple of days.
Maybe if the blank is just a Harrington though it will not make any difference. You cannot make a silk purse out of a sows ear. Years ago many of the guys around Pacific City used to tape the guides on the Harringtons with electrical tape and use a hose clamp to hold the reel on and fish with it like that and they caught fish, lots of fish with them.

i got the stuffs to fix the problem, i believe i can rectify the dribbles. what has me really po'd is that the guy could have picked up the rod today and paid for it. which would have given me enough mony to gas up the bourbon for this weekend on the lama. pay kf85 and get my rush ticket. so now will have to wait a wee bit longer.

i still may call wfff of have steve come by.

this rod is now kicking me arse! put a fresh x acto blade and began the carefull whiddling away when i told myself to not stab myself. 5 mins into the whiddling i shivd' myself real good. good enough to deserve at least 3 stiches... if i would have went to the ER. had my oldest daughter bandage up ol'brewer. i went back out to garage and finished the dribble wacking. then the sanding. i rinsed the sanded area with alchohol. i was expecting to see the sanding marks disapear. still some dull looking finish. with this go away with new hardner?

Hey Brewer it's not building if you don't draw a little blood.
Next time if you get drips and it's still sticky you can trim off the drips and heat the rest lightly and it will flow and smooth out some. This is in the first two hours.

No I have heard it all thanks for sharing Brewer LMAO. As Chris has stated I think we have all been there but your story has to be one of the best ones I have heard so fare. We need to start a thread on here Rod buliding gone bad. It will give all of us information when the time comes.. I doubt we can beat this one though...

the entire rod was a breeze, then came the final 2nd clear coat... the rod took a serious nosedive from there!!! cory picked it up yesturday and was very happy with it. thought it was a kicken rod.

now he wants a 12' sturgeon rod done.

well cory sent me an email and said the rod casted very and was able to toss the rr spikes. good call harry on the blank.

huh, he brought it to my attention that someone brought it to his attention that the rod is minus a lamiglass sticker on the blank. without this sticker it voids the warranty. he brought the blank to the house in a lamiglass plastic wrapped tube. i do not recall a sticker. i feel i goofed somehow. were would the sticker have been?

The sticker is with the tag on the end of the plastic sleeve.
What color was the blank, I might have one in my box.
If I don't want the sticker on my rod I put it inside the blank
before I glue on the butt cap so it is with it.
