need some big game brand & .cal suggestions
      #289024 - 05/12/07 09:21 AM

Me and a bud here in Ontario are going to FINALLY do some big-game hunting. Probably not this year, this year will be all about getting gear together and whatnot. We're both fairly experienced varmint hunters, but this also means we don't use anything much larger then a .22 mag. My longtime fav rifle is "just" a bolt single .22, no scope.

SO I'm looking for suggestions on what rifle to buy, brand, caliber, etc which would be suitable for big game. Preferably something that will suffice for moose, deer & bear. I'm not a big fan for buying a different caliber for every animal out there.

I'd prefer a smooth bolt action with a say 3 shot capacity (or whatever they come in...just not a single shot) and my buddy is looking for a semi-auto.

any real world suggestions appreciated...the guys at the shop showed me the most expensive thign right off the bat 'cause they know i'm new to this, lol.

Probably one of the best-kept secrets out there is the Savage 110 family of rifles (designated "11X" with the X being another number). They are noted for accuracy (but some very slight tune-up might make them even MORE accurate), and are low-cost to boot. A nice, reliable bolt action, and they are available in .30/06, among other calibers.

I use an '06 as well, easy to find GOOD ammo most anywhere.

didn't even think about the ammo point of view! where does 30-06 fit into the lineup? ie there's .223, .270, .303, .208 etc. so where does 30-06 fit in? sorry for being so noobish

Read some catalogs and the ballistics data. The cartridge has been around over 100 years, and been VERY successful through two world wars (as the US service round) and through numerous big game hunts.. Not enough room here to go into a long discussion.

30-06 is a do-it-all round for big game. The Savage rifles, as mentioned above, are accurate from the factory and affordable.

This can't be healthy. All this fishing is really messing with my head.

Well, with an .30-06, you can get loads in bullet weights from 110 grain (varmints, woodchucks, etc.) through mid-weight of 130, 150, 165 and 180 grain, all the way up to 220 grain (for VERY large animals), and with sufficient power, velocity and trajectory to take 'em cleanly. And all types and choices, from soft point, protected tip, polymer points, round nose, etc.

Can't go wrong with the ol standby 30.06! My weapon of choice for elk, deer and bear....Never shot the Savage, but my Browning Abolt is killer accurate. Good for you guys for joining in the fun....takin my wife out for deer this fall.... Ruger .243 for her, reminds me....we better git to shooting....she qualified marksman at boot camp so it shouldn't be a stretch for her to pick it up. let us know what you get and welcome to the board!!
