Boise (Mtn. Home) Hummers 2007 new
      #287972 - 05/04/07 08:52 AM

Saw the first 2 visitors to our feeders this morning. One was clearly a male black chinned. The other was probably the same, but it looked much bigger and much blacker throught the chest and belly. I'll stake out the feeder tonight.

Also have scads of goldfinches on my finch feeder. We'll be losing the females soon to nesting. It's a good time of year to be a birder...

I'm now being swarmed with Male Black Chinned. Saw 6 or so last evening, and several different ones this am. The boys lead the girsl by a week or so. Interestingly this is the earlies we've ever spotted them, beating last year by 5 days (the previous record). I think it's global warming.

Tons of black chinned, bot male and female. witnessed the male's courtship flight last evening. Amazing display, and the sound the wings make is incredible. I was about 25 feet away sitting on the patio, and he was doing the hummer version of the half pipe. Crazy fast. Too cool. I hope they nest close by.

Joe, I often witnessed the same sort of courtship flight when I lived on the Olympic coast. Here's an experiment to try with them....replace the liquid in the feeders with a Rose wine. Instead of "J" or "half pipe" flight they do a nifty "!" as they crash into the ground.

Wonder why I don't get any hummers around my house in Boise.

I just shot Scotch out my nose. Damn, that was painfully funny. Waste of good Single Malt also...

Well, I broke down and put out a feeder last week. Same old story....one hummer makes an occassional visit.

Maybe I should kill him to see if its the same one returning to the feeder.

It is hummingbird wars central right now with the broadtails moving in on the black-chins. Still a week till the rufous show up (based on historical records). What a hoot to watch the buzzers chasing each other.
