Dang it all!
      #289803 - 05/19/07 07:45 AM

...not the kind of trout fishing I like to talk about. A river otter has found my trout pond and has nearly wiped out my fish. Out of a hundred, maybe ten left. The darn thing swam within two feet of me herding the fish up into a "trout ball" and then slashed through them to get his meal. That darn thing outweighs my border collie so I don't wnat her tangling with it. It is amazing how these critter find out where the fish are. Pretty depressing.

Have you contacted the WDFW about mitigation? Ask what legal means you have of PERMANENTLY removing the thing. If they draw a blank, shoot, shovel, and shut up.

Or you can tell then that THEIR otter has destroyed you trophy fish ponds trout population and demand a cash settlement or replacement of the trout. You might become a regular stop on the trout truck's route...

What a bummer.

thanks for the sympathies...I have thought of it all; guns, nets, clubs, gaffs, etc but it's a tough call. I don't know if they are protected or not but it MAKES me want to do something drastic. It might be too late though as I only saw one fish today. I think it likes to visit at night too.

Contact the fish and game and tell them about your problem! They will tell you to how you can take care of it and on top of that tell them that you would like your fish replaced!!! Those fish are your property and you are allowed to protect them!!!!

You've got a point there Tony! Dances...for real? I'm always hesitant to involve F&G or any other agency for that matter...I guess I fear that they will come in a start telling me how to manage my property, declare my pond a protected wet land or some other form of nonsense..I will consider that though. I once mentioned my trout pond to someone who, it turned out, is involved in stream management and he got all worked up about my trout. He feared that they would escape and make their way to a nearby stream and end up eating all the cutthroat. From that point forward I have kept my mouth shut around anyone local.

I would just call F&G and tell them that you have got a problem dont endulge any info to them about nearby streams or anything like that just tell them that and otter has been stealing your fish and that you are wanting to know how you can take care of that problem! Or just wack the bastard and call it good! I would not tell anyone about you wackin the the little bastard though! Good Luck

Cant imagine getting any real help from a goverment agency in this day and age, even if you got your fish replenished, there would likely be a cost,--- shoot, shovel, shutup and get back to stocking the pond, think your mad now, wait till you get managment specifications for YOUR waters, or being told you cant have them, or what you can plant and when you can fish them, all the damn rules cause us to be pirates from time to time, it will get worse, not better-GOOD LUCK

I like shooting my .22 Benjamin. Accurate as hell at a pretty good range. I can shoot at a 'target' all afternoon and never bother the neighbors. Oops, wrong forum, sorry.
