My winter was extreamly productive. we had some tough conditions for a while over here but I was still able to put plenty of fish in the boat and on the bank. only about 20 fish off from where I was last year.

well, i'm gonna fish a few more days but it seems tough to get more than 3 or 4 a day now, march 31 my hot fishery ends and so does my steelhead season kind of, my last week of march is my favorite week of fishing all year, i ended the last 2 days on a good note, i went 11 for 18 and 8 for 10 the last two days. i got a summer on march 6, hopefully they will be around in numbers soon, i just like catching steelhead more than salmon. i get bummed when winters go away.

I was never able to get out when the rivers were in good shape this season. Either they were "up in the trees" or low, clear and cold.
I did get 4 fish in 6 trips, but I found it hard to locate the fish this year. The floods wreaked havoc w/ my rivers and all the holding water from years past is gone!

Early part of the 'winter' was ssssllllllooooooowwwwww due to water flows that were not that conducive to fly fishing. When the flow (upper Rogue) dropped back to 2500 (or less) cfs that it was GAME ON for fly rodders.

This was my first winter fishing for steelhead. I can tell you that my brother in law and I almost gave up on getting steelhead. The first four times we went out we got skunked. We had what we thought were a couple bites but didnt know for sure since we had not hookied a steelie yet. Then on the fith time around I hooked three and landed two and my brother in law went three for three. This picture is of my very first winter steelhead landed and all I can say is that we are now hooked on steelhead fishing. This one went 20lb and was 37in long. Very good first steelhead I would say! Anyway, this is a great site and I just wanted to share.

Dang! 20 lbs on your first. Well done! I can relate to your story about almost giving up. I'll head out for my 8th attempt in a couple weeks in search of that first fish. My first couiple of times presented some great opportunities, but I didnt know what I was doing. After joining this board I've learned tons and know that I could get fish given the same conditions of those first couple times. This year is my year. Anyway, congrats on a real beauty!

Thanks. Once you get your first there won't be many days were you don't get at least one steelie (especially if the conditions are good). The best advise I can give you is- don't panic when you hook a steelie, relax and let your reel do some work until you calm down. The first one I hooked I panic and tried to reel it in to fast and pulled the hook out of its mouth Some are just going to get off but if you play it cool have your drag set right and take your time you will land that first fish! Good luck

We did good for how many times we were able to make it out this winter , we did a little better in the 06 fall , we hit the Klickitat and hooked into some beauty natives landed one and got a cool video of me being spanked by another . And the Klamath was a lot of fun too for fall run steelies . We picked up some nice steelhead in the Wilson late this winter too .

I had the most incredible day of steelhead fishing march 31. I fished with my brother in law and cousin on two rivers (15 min apart). I hooked six (landed five) at the first river and at the second river hooked into ten in one hole in less than three hours (landed nine the biggest broke me off)! My brother in law did just as good and my cousin hooked into seven on the day. All in all we hooked about forty fish in one day on two rivers!! I will post up pics when I get them developed. I only had my disposable with me unfortunately. My very first winter steelead season is going to be hard to beat.
