Port Angeles Halibut
      #289930 - 05/21/07 02:48 PM

I'm taking my boat over to fish Thurs - Sat. Anybody have any suggestions, place, bait etc. I usually fish 31-36, Green Pt, Rockpile and sometimes Coyote Bank to the North and East, Freshwater Bay and Whiskey Creek to the West. Marine forecast and tides look good.

I'm a little antsy about leaving my boat parked in front of the motel overnt, does the PA Marina have overnt moorage?

Thanks

yes as far as i know the boat haven does have overnight moorage! Gonna be crowded this weekend for the derby is this weekend, but there are fish around! The fish have been smaller this year, 10-25 has been average, kinda worries me! Have only heard of 3 fish over 100lbs. all season! Did hear of one this mornin that bustin 80 braid and was a shear monster, local guy hooked up with it and it smoked his reel up and then busted the braid and he has caught several 200+ fish in alaska and said this fish was BIGGER! Fish seem to be around 300ft from what i'm hearing, haven't been out much myself for my fishing partner Navigator departed for alaska! Good luck!

I took my boat over to PA on Wed with my friend Karl. We were going to fish Thurs, Fri and Sat, but changed plans and came home Friday. They had small craft warnings for Sat and the PA Halibut Derby means real crowds at the ramps.

Windy mostly, rough, but did get calm for awhile on Thurs. We got two on Thurs and one on Friday, 42, 37 and 36. On Thurs we were back at the dock by 10:30. Quit about 2 on Fri. Got two at Green Pt and one at 31-36. 130 feet at Green Pt and 220 at 31-36. I wanted to fish 31-36 more but it was just too rough out there. I moored at Boathaven and saw a guy filleting a 120 on Thurs.

I like butts. Sticking the harpoon in them is more fun than reeling them in!

Real good eats!

Question: There were 15-20 commercial boats, both gillnet and seiners, fishing in only 40-50 feet of water off of Green Pt. What are they doing this time of year? They were there Thurs and Friday both and seemed to be working pretty hard.

Only thing I can think of is spring chinook. They run tight to the shoreline when they come thru the straits. We used to stop at the fishfarm netpens inside the PA hook to visit friends when coming back from butt fishing....always found springers chasing candlefish along the shore there. Freaky watching them feed in foot or two of water with their dorsals exposed.

That must be it, springers. Are all those boats tribal?

I saw what you are talking about at the end of the hook. It was in the 80's and there were a bunch of retired military and CG guys tossing buzzbombs from the shore on the CG base land. The Chinooks were chasing herring or candlefish right up to the bank.

Can't fish inside the hook anymore. I'm told there used to be great winter blackmouth fishing with live squid way back inside the bay, never tried it.

Since there seemed to be Butts there this week, I'm back again on 6/6. Taking my boat, my buddies camper. Can you recommend a decent RV Park in/near PA?

Thanks

They could be netting the cod or shrimping... the draggers ruined a great fishery at green point years ago. Sure hope its not a true cod fishery they are targeting.

Bit shallow for either. If it was shrimp it would be sidestripes or pinks and they would be using beam or otter trawls. I haven't heard boo about fishable numbers of True cod at Green Pt so doubt it was those.

A good RV park would be the KOA off O'brien Rd by the state patrol office! Couple of good ones out at the Elwha as well!!!

Barchaser I've been known to slay the searun cutts with 1 ounce green and silver Point Wilson Darts inside the Hook.
