First blood of the season
      #290014 - 05/22/07 09:44 AM

I finally broke my saltwater cherrie on Sunday. A friend booked a boat for a day out of homer and invited Dad and I along. The guide told us right up front that it had been pretty slow, and he was right. 4 rods, 8 hours of fishing, and only 3 kings and 3 dollies. Dad was dubbed the "Dolly Lama" as he caught all the dolly's while the rest of us bonked kings. Nothing too big, 18-23lbs, but one was a white king.
While not as good a day as AkScott had, we had fun, and I had some real good eats last night.
Hope to get some pics uploaded by this weekend.

Congrats on breaking your "saltwater cherry". For this time of year, there is NOTHING the matter with 3 Kings for the day! Quite often all we hear or post (myself included) are of the good days with large numbers of fish. Those will come later this season to all of us. But once again, I'd consider 3 Kings, for this time of year, still a pretty good day.

Jake, the meat was totally white, like a spawned out chum, kind of funny to look at but they eat the same as a regular red meat fish.
The bottom one is the white king.

Nice start for the season. kings look great.
White kings are great. There's no commercial market for them because people think something is wrong with it due to the pale meat color. Most of the locals prefer a white king over a red. especially in the smoker. Good on the grill also.
