Nooksack elk hunt
      #290331 - 05/25/07 12:06 PM

It's a go. 15 tribal permits and 15 non-tribal.
http://www.heraldnet.com/stories/07/05/25/100loc_b1elk001.cfm
The herd was 1700 in the 80's. Hunting stopped when the herd was 350. They moved 100 elk from the St. Helens area. Now with a herd size of 450 it's time to hunt?
It's actually justified in my mind because I don't think the state has a clue how many elk are there. I would bet it's higher than their estimates. Damage complaints are up, so maybe a few hunters will spook them away from people.

The Department of Natural Resources is trying to work out a sweet heart deal for the Lummi and Nooksack tribes where they will have keys to several thousand acres of DNR land that are gated off. Non tribal hunters would still be able to hunt but must hike in from the gates. There's legislative interest in this one. Apparently DNR may not have the legal authority to discriminate. DNR is gonna have a hard time justifying this deal due to the legislative interest.

Hmmmm...sound interesting. Most DNR land behind gates is still open to ATVs. Two timber companies have said they will give the tribal hunters access behind their gates. The area has a lot of private timber land locked up. I can't remember the names of the companies now, but it's property that used to be Crown Pacific and Longview Fiber. The LF gates are the nicest I've seen and heavily posted as "no motorized vehicles".

Looks like DNR has listened to reason and it's lawyers. Gates on DNR lands will be open to all hunters...non-tribal and tribal starting in the Nooksack units. Expect the same to occur statewide. Thank certain legislators for making sure DNR followed state law on this issue.
