tough fishing
      #290376 - 05/26/07 12:07 PM

springer fishing has been tough, i have woke up the last three days, not today at 2:45 in pursuit of springers, the first day i had the hot hand which i never mind, i had 3 out of the 4 bites to be had for a half dozen guys, i left at noon with a nice limit, the next day was brutal, i fished till 5pm, i had 10 drano bites, missed 7 and lost all three that i hooked, it was tough. yesterday was a slow day all around, there was a couple bites right at dark, none for me, then nothing for about 3hrs, my bobber dropped and i missed, another hour mine dropped again, i got that one though, long story short, i fished till seven o clock, landed two, broke one off on a hookset and missed 4. the water is so low, if the sun is out i can see my bait 12 feet under my bobber, and the shadows from fish swimming right by, it is tough right now, if it ever rains it should be pretty good. i'm fishing 80lb white power pro and 30lb big game for leader, and i have had the most bites every day, i am still convinced these fish are not line shy, most guys are using 15 or 20lb leader, i just couldn't do it, i would break every one off on the swing with that sar1265.

i don't know chris, i always fish white in the fall because i can see my belly better, i just magic markered about 6 ft and they bite it just the same, if i had some moss green on hand i would have switched but they are biting it as good as the guys fishing 50lb green, i was a little self concious about it the first day though, the only green i have is 100lb so i stuck with my finness presentation and 80lb, i did drop down to a 3/4oz bobber and about a 3 1/2ft leader though. i'm gonna try again tomorrow, hopefully it's sunny, that seems to help in the low water, it keeps them stirred up.

Course if you were using a spey rod tossing a flyline that would be called finesse fishing.

chris, i'm using a foam egg shaped float, i normally fish west coast and paint them pink but the egg bobbers seem to go down a little easier, they cast great on 80lb, i cast underhand all day because it is kind of tight and there are always a few guys around. pretty soon they will start holding in tidewater when the river warms up a couple more degrees, then i will beef up my gear a bit to a 2 oz bobber and 40lb leader, i would go to 50lb leader but i like a smaller hook and bait for springers and a 5/0 will not hold up to 50 and it is a little tight on the egg loop. i think they fight harder if you put max pressure on them anyways.
