I'm assuming we're talking about traditional style ML's. You have what is called a bullet puller. It fits in the end of the ramrod and looks like a wood screw. You push it down the bore until it contacts the projectile, then apply pressure and screw the tip into the lead projectile, then pull it out the barrel, dump the powder and clean the ML just as if it had been fired. BBob is correct. I think it's called a jag. I like to shoot it to unload. Big bang and lots of smoke

No, it's called a "screw" (and that's actually what it is). Yeah, it is surrounded by a brass collar to keep it from screwing up the bore.
But it's easier (and good target practice) to just "drop the hammer"!

Bobs correct, I think the jag is the cloth cleaner thingamajig?? They also sell a CO2 system that will blow the bullet and powder out without firing it...never tried one though.

The CO2 gadgets are the safest and easiest way. It's always better to unload in the bottom of an old stump after a days hunt. That way you can clean and dry the barrel and have a fresh dry load for the next day. Moist air after awhile can dampen powder to the point it won't fire or you might have a hang fire or very slow ignition. Makes for very inaccurate shot placement. If you unloading after a days hunt and it fails to ignite try a few more caps. If that doesn't work wait a bit then pull your nipple, put in some priming powder and touch it off. Should be enough to 'get the lead out'. Check depth with your ram rod to make sure. A couple of things to do to keep it dry during the day is to cover the capped nipple with some bees wax. You can also push a bees wax saturated patch down the barrel. Make sure it's seated against the patched ball or whatever your using.
With a flinter use some beeswax around the pan to seal it off a bit.

When we first started hunting with blackpowder we would unload our guns in the woods until we had a guy get really hot at us. He said we were spooking everything in the area. I think he was right. Now we shoot them somewhere before we hit the pavement. The CO2 thingy sounds pretty sweet.

I thought you were supposed to unload it into an elk or a buck.
