Andy, try hunting in the "puckerbrush" in Alaska....grizz-land, and I don't mean that bearded guy....... you.....get my drift.. can't see 10 feet and there are these BIG tracks can't squeeze out a fart your pucker factor is so tight. And that there is the truth, and if you've never been in it, you'll think I'm lying. If you have, you know.
You guys will get a trophy blackie, I'm just waiting for the pics......and wishin' I was there....Good luck to you and Hunter.....you will get him.....

If you've ever had to go thru a bear tunnel, it's something you'll never forget.

Hope it's a great hunt, I wish I was there.

Our group took many bears back when it was open to hound hunting. There was nothing more hair raising that a bear bayed up. He'd grab dogs as they'd bite at him and chomp down on their back with their jaw making a sound as loud as you can clap your hands...

We had one bear that bayed up in a stump hole and it was super thick getting to him, he kept grabbing dogs and pulling them in and the sound of a hound dog getting chowed on makes your hair raise even more..... It's not easy getting a clean shot when dogs are flying in from every direction...

We also had one that was shot out of a tree with a pistol that came down and bit the guy that was shooting, took 3/4's of his calf off. That particular bear took a .44 slug to the back of the head at point blank range by my buddy.... That was our wildest experience..

Well, nothing too wild during today's hunt. Hunter did a good job of being quiet, and he was a pretty good sport. Saw some sign, 8" diameter poop piles, and on the way out we saw a bunny. Hunter wanted his Papa to blast it with the .45-70, but cooler heads prevailed.

Hunter donated a maple bar to the bait pile (legal for depredation hunts on the QIN), and it almost made it through the whole hunt when a crow flew down, took a few bites out of it at 8:30pm, and knocked it on trhe ground. "I'm gonna get that crow someday," Hunter said. Good to see the killer instinct rise up in him twice in a day. Gonna have to go on a crow hunt some time.

Time for bed!

Still going hunting today, meeting up with John at 3:00pm. I like the evening hunts, get out in the woods, sit still for 5-7 hours, and just experience the forest. I've never done the stand hunting for big game before, as I almost exclusively still hunt, or do drives, but in the right circumstance I can see where it has its merits. It was a huge test of will for Hunter to keep quiet and motionless for that long, but we had a good time.

John said that he has never had a client go three days without a bear, and today will be day three. We joked last night that one of us should go with Stan and John, and the other one hang out in the blind. He's seen them driving into or out of the area, so they are there, and the piles in the middle of the road prove that they are around.

I would also be interested in a spot and stalk hunt but my father-in-law's choice of gun, a Marlin guide gun in .45-70 isn't suited to shots much over 100 yards. The first night we were 32 yards from the bait station and last night it was 22 yards, so both would have been a simple chip shot from that range.

His issue is his night vision isn't that good, so I gave him my Red-dot holo sight to use for today's hunt. He's having it mounted and boresighted today, and we'll sight it in on the way up there. I had no problem making out the sights in low light, but with 20 minutes until full-on dark, he had issues.

Our spirits are high, and it has been a nice time sharing the blinds with my son and father-in-law, and I'm getting my money's worth. Hunter has a graduation assembly tonight, so he won't be joining us.

The pee jug was a big help last night, especially for Hunter.

I can only remember one trip down the Queets or Quinault and not seeing at least one bear...hopefully tonight!

Yup. Covered in bear blood. Meat is down, and we got it all on tape!

Time for a shower. Film at 6pm.

Well,

I suck at transferring video from the DVD to Photo Bucket, but once I figure it out, you'll love it. Check the big game hunting section tonight or tomorrow, depending on my Photobucket-fu.

In the mean time, here's a photo.

Full story and report to follow.
