I'm not expert either but i though you weren't supposed to use round ball with barrel that has a twist. Anyone want to chime in on this one, Dogfish?

yeah i heard that , and got some powerbelt bullets to try out. shot it today, pretty accurate right out of the box. just had to raise the rear sight 4 "clicks". had alot of fun. took 13 shots at ten inch round targets , 5 at 50 yds. 4 at 100, and 3 at about 130. every shot hit the targets. i'm satisfied. i used the triple7 powder pellets,

I like shooting my ml,i have a TC Thunderhawk. Had it for about 7 years or so. Upgraded to the peep site, but i'm thinking about the fiber optic type next. I shoot Pyrodex granular type, I heard teh triple7 pellets are awesome..maybe i'll try it out this summer and kill a deer in the fall. GOod luck with your gun.

yeah, i have always liked those peeps.the fiber optics are sweet though too. my hunting buddy has been muzzleloading for a long time and he was really impressed with the new gun. and the triple7 pellets, now he wants a new muzzle loader.

I'm thinking you would be a lot happier shooting a sabot,I use 348 grain Powerbelt with a 100 grains of pyrodex, I'm thinking about going to triple seven but I've two boxes of pyrodex pellets to use up first. The 348 is a good all around sabot for deer esp. and elk. Black powder is extremely dirty and you have to clean your barrel or swab it out after a couple shots.Pyrodex is great and they say triple seven is even better.Your gun with the twist its got will shoot sabots much better.I think and not near the hassel !!! you can shoot a lot more before swabing out your barrel. gonna go shoot some more tomorrow.i like the idea of the bullet engaging the rifle in the barrel, not just the nylon sleeve (sabot). anyway the only sabots i have came with the gun. they are 240 grain tc mag express sabots.. copper plated - not legal to hunt with - .i will fire'em up tomorrow though to see how they fly. oh yeah- we fired 13 shots without having any reloading difficulty. i won't complain about the 777 pellets.

Yeah ... I LOVE the "old, traditional" roundball rifles. But the deep-rifled long, slow twists (1 in 62" to 1 in 72") are PERFECT! You can sight 'em in so with a patched round ball (use pillow ticking and crisco for lube!) so they are 3 inches high at 100 yards, and dead on at 100 yards. This takes 100 gr. FFG (GOEX) for a .50, or 120 gr. FFG (GOEX) foe a .54. And, they are very "forgiving". Take large critters well, too! Cut the charge in half, and they are dead on at 50 yards! The so-called "half charges" are a fun target and plinking groups, and inexpensive. Very good accuracy, and since they are traveling relatively slow, good small game takers, too!
Betcha you can't do THAT with your fast twist barrels! The fast-twist barrels only give good accuracy with one trial-and-error light loading for round balls, and it is usually a low velocity loading.

I bought one and just shot it today. I shot the Triple Seven powder and the triple Seven pellets. Used the conicals 320 gr. and the ones that came with the gun (sabots) and some 250 grain hollow point lead saboted. I watched the cd-rom that came with the gun and did it just like that. What a hoot! I was needing something a little different and this just fit the bill. Put every round in a ten inch circle at 50 yds, mixing and matching powder projectiles and adjusting the sites. I am very pleased. Brought it home and washed the nipple and breech plug in warm tap water regreased it and good to go.

I have had my Black diamond XR for about 6 weeks now. I'm still trying to find the right combo of powder and bullet. I have a 3 inch group at 50 meters with the 240 grain Vital Shock Sabot and 100 grains FF. I am on paper at 100 meters with 110 grains, but will try a different bullet/brand to get a closer group. Any thoughts out there?
