Hooking things besides fish new
      #270792 - 12/17/06 09:16 PM

Just wondering how many other fishermen besides myself have had the experience of hooking themselves or other people in the act of fishing you tell me your story and I'll tell mine ...

Plenty.

Once my brother walked behind a buddy that was flinging a size 10 humpy. It buried past the bend. I did the loop of leader butt material trick and one quick snap had the fly out.

I hooked myself with a size 2 (3X-long) stonefly once (30 MPH upriver winds are not fun to cast in). Right through the earlobe. Just clipped the fly off and kept fishing. At the takeout (I was fishing in my pontoon) a guy kept staring at me. Finally he asked why I put a fly through my earring hole. I told him I didn't have an ear ring hole till about 2 hours ago. I thought he was gonna faint. Wuss.

The best story ever was 2 buddies bass fishing. Buddy 1 hooks the anchor line with a crank bait. He leans over and "unhooks the rope". Unfortuantely he hooks his thumb with one treble hook, and his index finger with the other. The good part is that the rope is in between his thumb and finger. Buddy 2 climbs over the top of the guy, cuts the anchor rope (saving both ends) then ties the rope back together. Good news is the boat is anchored. Bad news is Buddy 1 still has 2 hooks stuck in 2 fingers. Buddy 2 (carefully, like a good surgeon) grabs one of the hooks with a pair of needle nose pliers and (carefully....) twists and pulls the hook out. 15 minutes later after the screaming/crying/swearing subsides buddy 1 states that it will take a few more beers before hook 2 comes out. Apparently hook 2 popped right out and 2 bandaids later they went back to fishing.

B-Run can elaborate or straighten out any fallacies in the story, he was the hook ripper...

OK here goes mine ,while flyfishing in the Mattole river I tied on a #4 muddler everything was going great until a good gust of wind pushed the line against the rod . And you guessed it , #4 hook buried in my casting hand thumb. And I mean all the way in . well I snipped off the line and tied on another fly but that darn fly kept rubbing on the rod and boy did it smart . well I figured thats it for the day so down river to the crossing I go ... Crossed the river and found my buddy Smokey Savage fishin at the Drurey hole he laughed and said something about using my fly patch nextime and tried the line trick .... To no avail he said Dr .Dick was gonna charge me 50$ to remove it and we both thought that was a waste of good beer money ... So out come the hemostats , I grabbed my thumb and Smokey snatched it out along with a chunk of skin ... Man I turned the air blue with a few choice comments , but pretty soon we were laughin and heading down river together to the next run . cant remember if we caught any fish that day or not , I sure miss my buddy Smokey ...

At the end of the day when steelhead fishing with the wind blowing into my casting arm, the back of my head will look like a pin cushion.

Good idea. I learned a long time ago that it was easier to pull the hook our of my head if I mashed down the barb.

Who can identify the fly? Looks to me like a PT or possibly a hairs ear of some sort.

Mark, I always fish barbless, not necessarily for that reason, but it does help in relasing myself.

Well, this November I was fly fishing for trophy Browns on their spawning journey in a great lakes trib. As I was climbing out to relocate, I started slipping on an angled rock, and took a spill! (November, in 30 degree plus water is NOT a good time to be swimming, especially for a 72 year old!) Anyway, as a "good samaritan" came down to assist, and asked me to hand him my rod, I couldn't, as I had hooked myself pretty good. I dug the "mashed down" barb from my hand first (water running in my waders all the time), then proceeded to hand him the rod, and stood up - full waders and all.

To make a long story short, I took off my wading shoes, poured the water out, took off the waders and poured the water out, took off my socks and wrung 'em out, stripped down to my skivvies and wrung my trousers out, wrung out my (fortunately) fleece shirt, I then took down the rod, reel, packed my gear, started the car and HEATER, and all in a windy snow flurry.

Came home, cleaned up and put away/hung up my gear, washed my clothes, and FINALLY took a HOT shower, and made myself a healthy few drams of anti-freeze and snakebite medicine. (I usually carry a jar of snakes with me in case I can't find any!) All I needed was a willing woman to warm me up!

And damn, I didn't even get any fish!

Oh, well, life is GOOD! And being a flyfisherman even makes it BETTER!

Well I've hooked myself on a couple of occations, but the biggest 'incidental catch' was a lady floating by on a rubber raft. Zoned out and just didn't see her coming down stream ..... Good thing was I hooked the raft, not her.

I was fishing the Nisqually and after seeing boat after boat of native american tribal netters emptying their big white tubs of dirty black rotten king salmon I decided to take action into my own hands. Me and my buddy were camping, so obviously we were hardly sober and when that next jet boat came roaring through the hole we were fishing I just continued to cast like he wasn't there. It was only fair seeing as he ran through the hole like we weren't there. And i'll leave the rest to the imagination.

I hooked my eyebrow real good when learning the double spey.

Scuba diving at Titlow Beach, just south of the Narrows, inside the old ferry dock pilings. Noticed something pass by my mask as I moved forward through the piles. Spent the better part of the next five minutes removing myself from a perch fisherman's gear...thank god for thick neoprene. Spent the next five minutes "explaining' why it is NOT cool to fish off a dive bouy.

Looking back on it, I wish I would have cored a hole or six in his flinmsy boat from below and watched the spectacle from about twenty feet down. Two guys fishing, six or eight 1-inch holes should have kept em busy.

Wasn't a fly hook, but I managed to get a small treble hook in the web between my thumb and first finger a month or so ago. Got it on video even!

I was really happy that it was a little one!
