One bite, two dead dogs new
      #294301 - 07/07/07 10:09 PM

This afternoon, my 3 yr old son left the front door open and 90 lb Lab/Heeler cross went for a run about the neighborhood. The neighbor's 3 lb Yorkie apparently got territiorial and charged her. I was working upstairs and heard nothing, until my neighbor came over pounding on my door. "...your dog just killed my dog!"

OH CRAP!

I was all over in one bite. It looked like an artery was punctured and the little one bled out almost immediately.

I called animal control and they came to get my dog. Until they got here, she was the picture of perfect behavior. She willingly jumped up in the truck and turned around wagging like nothing was wrong and she was going for just another car ride. OK, now that was a bit hard to scratch her ears and then close the door on her.

We all said our good-byes and then the truck drove off. They'll be putting her down tomorrow.
Then came the explanations to the boys about responsibility, consequence, and doing the right thing, even when it's hard.

Next time, I'll be a lot more careful about taking a free dog from someone who admitted she was once rescued before they got her...

Sad! Kudos to you Geoff for handling the situation in the proper way! That is one tear jerker for all parties involved. Bill

I'm sorry to hear that...hard to explain some of our stupid human rules to animals, especially when they are just doing what comes naturally, or even just being playful but perhaps a bit rough. Darwin didn't take the AKC into account in his writings, did he?

When I was a kid, we had to put our Irish setter down after he jumped on a friend's daughter who had come out of our garage screaming like an idiot and flailing her arms around. Once again....dog did what come naturally and went to play. Lawsuit or dead dog...my dad chose the trip to the vet.

Hope your kids understand and it's not too hard on them.
