I can honestly say that Puget Sound has too many dog fish. Fished Saturday around clay banks, Delco, etc. Saw 1 Salmon caught and talked with another boat that had a Humpy. Everyone else, trollers, jigs, etc. were catching dogfish. Lots of boats. Got back to the ramp just as the rain started.

What is anti-dog gear? I haven't seen that it matters much what I have on if there are dogfish around.

Just playin....but, I do think hootchies and trooling speed make a bit of a difference..? Not sure, but, the last few years we only seem to get a dog or two each year. I've trolled right thru "dog packs" and rarely seem to get them hooked. If dogs are thick I forgo the scent. I don't fish near the bottom either. Seems to work for us.

Not using scent/bait helps a lot. Found that out through trial and error last year. They also seem to like spoons less than they like hoochies.
Not fishing the bottom seems pretty impossible when hunting Chinook though isn't it? Don't they mostly hold to the bottom?

Yup, you got that right. Fished last Wednesday and Friday at Possession. Got 3 unmarked wild fish 10-15 on Wed and a 6 pd Blackmouth and 12 pd marked ocean fish on Friday in the monsoon. There were tons of doggies. One even hit a Coyote. When I quit using herring strips on the squids and scent on the spoons they seemed to slack off.

I watched kwaj line us up with two fish in two passes at less than 50ft of cable while in 130ft of water. He made a believer out of me that staging fall chinook are not always on the bottom. A few factors played into getting them at that depth but for than info I'll just leave it to Tims mojo.
No dogfish on for me yet this season...bummer cause I miss reeling them in...NOT!
That's funny Andy!

Cliff the bottom dredging thing for kings really only applies to Blackmouth. Even then not always. Early mornings look for nooks to be in the upper water column...40 to 60 feet. Sounds like Kwaj is dialed in?

Cliff, I was out on Possession today, were you? I got one Blackmouth (white meat), clipped, about 8 pds. There was a nice bite on the eastside very early and then zippo. I didnt use herring strips or scent today and got zero doggies. I fished all over the water column and, eastside, westside, sw corner etc.
I got this update on 9 and 10 from NSIA. Sounds like the 5000 quota is about there. Oh well I'm, going up to Ucluelet next week anyway.
The preliminary catch estimate through Sunday July 22nd for the Area 9 and 10 chinook selective fishery is 4,062 chinook harvested, with 564 harvested in Area 10. Catch rates were extremely high in Area 9 last week, approaching 0.50 chinook/angler, but have dropped off over the weekend to 0.16 chinook/angler on Saturday and Sunday. Area 10 catch rates were good early in the week at 0.16 chinook/angler, before dropping on Friday and Saturday to 0.075 chinook/angler. The Area 10 catch rate increased to 0.19 chinook/angler on Sunday.

Yup, we were out there! Started out on the East side then moved to the West as the tide switched up. We picked up a decent Chinook and a Coho over on the SW corner. Both in 80-90' of water.

Conversation at the ramp. The fishcheckers said the retention rate was around 60%. I went out 3 times, got 3 unmarked "wild" fish 10-15 (released obviously), one marked ocean fish 10 (red meat) and two typical blackmouth 6-8 (pale pink meat). Retained 50%. Other guys I talked to at the tie down all had the same story. Released a high pecentage of ocean run fish and most of those retained were Blackmouth. I suspect if you dont consider the Blackmouth, the retention rate is much lower.
I'm still very suspicious of the hatcheries. My fishing buddy did volunteer fin clipping at Issaquah 5-6 years ago. He was the only volunteer the others were casual labor. They had a budget and when they hit the budget they quit clipping! They only clipped 30%. I know Norm Dicks and some others got legislation a few years back to require all hatcheries that get federal $ to mass mark. But I wonder if they really do it. Who checks?
My rant for the day.

FJ as I recall from our expedition in the bay the view on hot summer days could be superb.
Barchaser WDFW and now the tribes are using computerized automated trailers for most mass marking. Sometimes the system burps and some of the fish aren't clipped...sometimes it clips of caudal fins or worse. Shiat happens.

Witnessed next boat over land 34# toad...got a closer look at the takeout...say goodnight!

Goose, I saw the trailer you're talking about once on the Lewis. I heard those things killed too many fish and they quit using them. Friend of mine was up at Winterharbour on Van Island last week. He came back with a story that the Canucks are using some sort of indelible paint or ink. They put a big yellow dot on the fish's belly just behind the gills. Sounds cheaper and easier than clipping.

OMG Greg you don't know what a Dogfish looks like? Think of a real friendly banker type who is addicted to fishing and hunting.
Blackmouths are feeder nooks that do not out migrate into the Pacific ocean.

Greg, Dogfish are sharks. Bait stealers mostly. Blackmouths are feeder chinooks.

I did have sunscreen on, but even 30 SPF doesn't do too much when you spend 5 days straight on the ocean in blue sky weather.
I might have misappropriated bait once in a while from egg buckets left at Olsen's.
