In two weeks I'll be in Anchorage. I plan to take a 10'6" med-lite casting rod loaded with 10lb test for spoon duty. I use this rod for hatchery steelhead and early silvers down here. Seem reasonable for the Anchorage area the third week of August? Can I expect most silvers in that period of the run to be, say, under 10lbs? I also have a med-heavy rod I could take. My 8wt is going for sure. Where's a good place to go if we need flies, lines, and misc gear? I've been going over maps and regulations for the question of where to find silvers and the guy we're staying with will have some suggestions. Any hints on rivers within a couple hours drive are always welcome though.

I'd take the medium heavy stuff. It's combat fishing at Ship Creek which is right downtown near the Port of Anchorage. another good option would be down the Seward hwy. to Bird Creek. Also a small stream and combat fishing but well worth the short drive.. The Sportsmans Warehouse in Anchorage is WAYYY better than any down here. They can tell ya where is agood place to start. Alot of teh Silvers averhge OVER 10lbs so heavier might be better.

Ship and Bird are already putting out some good numbers of fish, and will get better by the time you get here. The valley streams like Sheep, Willow, Montana will also have good numbers of fish then. I'll second Brians suggestion on the med havy. You'll run into a lot of silvers over 10 lb's in that time and most of the places are combat fisheries so you'll want to be able to get the fish in quickly. Sportsmans and B&J's are my go to's for tackle here in town.

I guess I'll take the med-heavy rod then. Thanks.
