Fished the high tide at 7:30 last night just south of Southworth ferry teriminal. We started out jigging for fresh herring. The coho were slamming our herring jigs. We lost two rigs to them suckers. They were even chashing our led to the surface. Went home after two hours with all three of us limiting. One king and one silver each. Woke up this morning at four and headed out again. We were on and off the water by 7:45 with our limit. Only one king released due to being unclipped.Every other boat out there was pulling in fish. After last years slump, it sure felt good to have fish in the boat. We realeased a lot of blackmouth at 20 inches as well. Tones of fish being marked from top to bottom in 150 ft of water or less. I will tell you what, the sivers do not have lock jaw this year. Also, I pulled in my first king with white meat. Can anyone tell me what the difference is between the kings with white meat and the ones with red meat.

Went out this morning out of Gig Harbor. My duaghter had to release a 10lb buck and I had to let go og hard fighting 17-20lber. We were at the wrong endf of the run when the birds were slamming bait. Friend of ours got two nice silvers out of there. I had pics but accidentally deleted them At least my King skunk is GONE!!!!!!!!! UV b2 squid was the ticket.

We have been catching our own herring with jigs. The last couple of years, it has made all the difference in the world. I don't know if it is the same for you but the kings are a little darker than last year. They are also not as agressive on the take. The coho are taking the line off the down rigger. The kings aren't. Not even the 16 and 24 pounder today and yesterday. Once they see the boat the fight is on. When they hit, we kept thinking they were shakers. I am waiting for my brother to send pics via email. When I get them, I will post them

White meat vs. red meat in the salt is a genetic difference.

Both our kings popped the rigger. The big one I thought was still on. Nope just peeling line like he was in a hurry to go somewhere. Both were also nickle bright.

Genetics is a strange thing. Either way, the white sure tasted good coming off the barbeque tonight. I hope to get out again next Monday. I also looked up the fishing dots in the tide table. According to the tell tale dots, fishing was suppost to be at its worst. Hmmmm!

I've always been told that different meat color in a king is due to their diet. More Krill & crustaceans, darker meat, more invertebrates like squid, whiter meat.

Went out again in area 11 the last two days. My brother and I hit up Dolphin point this time. Same technique, same results. Ended up with one pink as a bonus. It took us an extra 3 hours of trolling this time.

Sounds like 11 is great! I have to learn that water sometime.
On the Columbia, white meat Chinooks are called Tules which run mostly in the lower river tribs, Lewis etc. They are poorly regarded as table fare compared to Up River Brights which are highly regarded and also fall run. At lot of guys throw Tules back, plus they are usually darker than URBs.
Blackmouths are often white meat, prob more than half. But there is no genetic relation to Tules that I know of. I just got back from Ucluelet BC fishing this week. We got 7 Chinooks and two of them were White Kings. The two whites were not finclipped.
It may be genetic as far as the Tules are concerned, but there are a lot of white Blackmouths and white Chinooks in BC also. I've never really known the real reason, genetic or food?. I would think the Blackmouths would be pretty consistent DNA since they are all hatchery fish, I think from the same stock.

Barchaser, I don't believe over half of the Puget Sound blackmouth are white unless you are talking about the ones up next to BC.

jim, that was just a guess. In the 80's I used to keep my boat at Anacortes at a boat house with an elavator down to the water. I fished the San Juans a lot then and there were a lot of white meat Blackmouth. It does seem like the further north, the more white meat fish.

Thanks for the input. The meat tasted great on the barbeque. I am going to stay out of the water for a while. Low tides have brought empty promises in the past. I will head out again next week sometime. This year seems to be promising. Last year bit the big one. I am hoping for a good season of salmon. It is a great past time until winter stealhead arive.

Good to see ya getting into them this past week. Went kinda slow for us, but, the last couple days have been getting better. Been catching more fin models than not, hopefully that'll change quick. Nice tides lately.

Only hooked 2 unclipped fish out of 13 kings between my brother, the kids and I. The coho action has just been insane between tide changes. We stop trolling and throw jigs in. They chase them to the surface half the time. Sure beats the lock jaw bastards from last year. We have also been trolling straight plugs instead of flashers. Fresh caught herring is the ticket. Good luck!

I have not fished that area. My brother lives in Port Orchard. I am sure he knows the scoop. He told me the Nates are netting in the salt. They were pulling in huge numbers too. They were netting out in front of downtown Port Orchard. I don't know what run they belong to. It can't be good.
