Sweet Local Boid Access
      #296866 - 08/02/07 05:31 PM

I just got a letter granting permission to hunt waterfowl on about 200 acres of private tidelands on the north side of the Dosewallips River flats. Hasn't been hunted in nearly a decade and the boids believe it is a safe refuge. I'll have keys to the gate and there is a primitive boat launch. Need to find me an inexpensive john boat to make a floating blind.

Don't let Junkie find out or he'll be on your door step every morning at 4:00am during hunting season. He has even been known to play the part of retriever for the day, just to be allowed to come along...

Sounds like a wonderful opportunity for you. The whole area of hunters will benefit as you keep them "boids" moving for them also. I'd bet you put some effort into acquiring an opportunity like that. Enjoy the rewards! Bill

"or some one with there DB set up for 3 that would put it on the door with the coffie and rasbery filled donuts." That'll work . The resident geese usually handg out on these tidelands also.

Hatch an inexpensive one.

Just waiting for the letter for permission to use the tidelands and boat ramp. Plus the gate key. Birds have not showed up yet but should be here soon as this winter is predicted to be nasty. Jim you are invited as is Foxtrotter as you both have the boats needed to hunt this place. Fishjunkie and Pinch are invited to participate also if there is a seat available. Hmmm might as well extend an invite to Bux also. Anyone else interested? The tidelands owners are Taylor Shellfish and they are simply interested in anything legal that will keep the scoters from shoaling up over their seeded clam beds..scoters can eat quite a bit of clams in one day. Primary birds that will be in the area are Mallards, Widgeon and Pintails. There will be some Green Wing Teal and Goldeneye. Quite a few 1,000 Scaup are in the area offshore also plus Canvasback and Butterballs. We might look at a deeper water setup to harvest these diver duck species. There are several flocks of resident Canadian geese that use the area daily. Actually there is room for several boats and hunting parties each day.

Thx Gooose. Hopefully get a chance to take you up on that. Last year was disappointing, too many working weekends I'm in Spokane now, but back with the same outfit as before, so Olympia visits are frequent. Just have to drive my rig over instead of the exempt variety. Mostly Fri or Mon mtgs, and I've got a ton of exchange that I need to burn up.

Marty I am not familiar with who that is? But if he comes with your support as a hunter/person I welcome him. I have to contact the shellfish/tidelands manager asap about the letter of permission and a key for access. I may be able to work this out where I do not always have to be there for our membership to hunt these tidelands. Just have to get to know them as the access is based upon the tidelands managers trust of me to not do anything that will cause issues for him or his company. Migrating birds are not in yet but I suspect that will be changing very soon due to this winters weather predictions.

Heard the honkers for the first time this year...wish I could hunt this wetland area as it's just a couple hundred yards from my back deck.

Hopefully this weather will bring in the migratory birds as all there is now is the local breeders. Marty no problem including the young lad in some hunts. I can probably set up 3 seperate boat blinds as long as all 3 parties cooperate aka only taking shots at boids or flocks that are dropping in to the decoys. So far I have Fish4steel,JimW and Foxtrotter interested and they have boats...did I miss someone? Pinch might make it for some trips and will need a seat as will Martys girlfriends boy. These setups will all be open water anchored setups well offshore except for the one in the middle of the tideflats. Mobile tideflat blinds using stakes, wire fencing and camo cloth is also an option early in the incoming tides. I can also have my 18 foot wide body duck hunting kayak availabe if I can find someone to haul it down there on the first trip..just toss it on top of your boat/trailer and haul it down there....I'll probably just leave it down there stashed in the bushes. Handy for getting around as it only draws about 2 to 4 inches of water depending on whose fat arse is in it. It can haul up to 60 dekes and you can safely shoot from it.

Very much looking forward to blasting some boids with you all!

MM not forgotten. I'd really like to harvest some Blue Bills aka Scaup this year. Plenty of them raft up offshore and I'll hopefully add a dozen Bluebill dekes to my setup plus a couple Goldeneyes. I always thought of Goldeneyes as being fish ducks with the taste to go along with that opinion until a couple years ago. They are actually right up there with Canvasbacks in the quality eating category.
