I'm new to salmon fishing and need advice on getting a new rod. I mostly wade fish for Kings and Pinks in rivers. I got a chance to browse through this forum and got more confused afterwards with the properties of blanks, guides, fibers, etc. I'm using to running to GI JOES and picking a Ugly Stik because they can take the beating. It looks like there are more to a fishing rod than how much you can bend it before breaking. I need some info on what to look for in a fishing rod base on the kind of fishing I want to do? What to look for in a rod builder? Any builder recommendation? What are the difference I can expect to see in a "good" fishing rod compared to my trusty Ugly Stik. Can i get a custom King salmon rod for less than $150? I want something that can take a beating and not break just because I snag something. It seem like this was a problem from reading the other discussions in this forum.

Warning!! Brand bashing will now commence.
Kings and Pinks, largest salmon and smallest salmon. One rod, Hmmm, challenging.
8.5 to 9 ft casting rod. 8-17 lb (little light for Kings and a little heavy for Pinks)
2 spools or 2 reels - 10 lb. line for pinks and 15 for Kings.
Trigger style handle and preferably cork.
Look for sensitivity and lightness. Rods breaking on snags is from abuse. Point the rod at the snag to get loose. If something breaks it will be your line.
A Buzz Ramsey Berkley rod is OK on the cheaper side. Lamiglass has some mid-price range rods, as does Rainshadow and St. Croix with Loomis running about $200.

Sorry, let me be clear. I'm looking for a new rod for King fishing only. I'm not looking for a dual use rod.

In that case:
8 - 17 lb. or 10 - 20 lb line class rod
15 - 20 lb. mainline.

i would look for something in the 10-20, or maybe even 12-25 range(if you're fishing heavier water or where there's a lot of snaggy stuff around).
a quality rod that won't run you an arm and a leg is the lamiglas G1310-T. it's an 8'6" 10-20 rod that is excellent for kings and chums, as well as big winter runs and makes a good plunking stick in a pinch as well. it's nothing super fancy, but it's a solid piece of equipment. they run $120-140 most places, and go on sale every so often. i think i paid $109 for mine, but that was in 1999

okay, my vote is a 1021 and contact harry, osprey rods, super good deals and the rods are almost too pretty to fish, just my opinion because i have owned his rods and know that they are better than a factory loomis..

no bs here, i own your rods and have seen many, you are educated in rods further than anyone could ask, hope to talk to you soon, i need to place an order, but i want your advice on what's the right blank for what i'm doing.

Best all around do just about everything rod would be 10-17# IST1025 or IST1085... Made in spin or cast its my go too guide rod for clients throwing spinners etc..
