Good Spoon Blank??
      #297348 - 08/08/07 12:19 PM

I was looking to build a new rod for use for spoons. I was really looking at the 1085. I was wondering which blank would be better to use for spoons, the RX7 or the about to be offered RX8?? Also if anyone else had any ideas for a good spoon rod.

thanks
sean

there's quite a few schools of thought on what makes a good spoon blank. i like something between 9 and 10 feet, with a stiff, fast action to be able to set the hook hard. i know of one guy who swears by glass ugly stik rods because the tip really lets a spoon throb enticingly.

i'm currently building a lamiglas XSH1022MT(10', 8-17, it's the bill herzog model) blank. i would have gone with the XSH1082MT(9'6, 8-17) since i usually fish smaller rivers, but this one only ran me $65 on ebay and i couldn't resist.

batson's 1085(when its out) sounds like an excellent choice for silvers and winter runs. the RX7 would probably be just fine -- i don't think having a super-high modulus rod really helps a lot with tossing hardware, as the fish will usually just try to destroy a spoon or spinner, and you'll feel that even on an old glass rod.

if we aren't supposed to eat fish, why are they made out of meat?

Depending on the size of spoon 3/4oz and down the XST1084 stiff butt soft fast tip or the 3/4-1.5 IST1085 are premo maybe Emory will chime in and give us his feed back on which one he prefers.

Karry,
I agree the XST1084 is an absolutely outstanding blank and would work very well for casting smaller spoons for Steelhead and the IST1085 would work well for larger spoons and maybe the bigger rivers.
Two piece blanks make more sense for most people because of the problems transporting one piece blanks but if given the choice I prefer one piece blanks for myself so as to avoid the problem with stress concentration caused by the ferrule. Do you have any plans to build IP963's or IP964's in the RX8 graphite? I think that when extended by 12 inches they make great one piece Steelhead rods.
