A good thing to do is to start training him to go to his "place". This should be a mat he can lie down on about the size of a door mat. An empty bulap bag will work for that matter.

Good thing is you can train this at home in the yard or inside the house even. Train this to the point that when you say "place", the dog knows he is to go to the mat and stay there. He can sit or lie down, but not leave his place.

When he's mastered that concept, put the mat in the boat. Use the command "place". Train to the point that he will willingly go to the mat and sit or lay down without leaving.

Then he's likely ready to give it a try on the water. If you really have trouble, tie him with a short lead so that he is forced to stay in his "place" and doesn't have free range to roam the boat or jump out.

Like Foxtrotter I also use the "place" command in the boat. It is very useful when the boat is underway. Once fishing
I like to use the "curb" command. It is simple to teach and great in keeping your partner from going into one room or area to the next.

I teach the curb by having your partner "stay" by a doorway and you then step through, swinging your free hand across the door jamb to make an invisible barrier and say "curb". When your partner starts to move through the doorway correct him and move him back to the other side and repeat making the barrier and giving the command.

It usually only takes a few times doing this for your partner to learn. Once the doorway is mastered you can use the "curb" in more open areas.

I use it on my boat between the passenger seats. This keeps the fishing area clear and my partner can move around in the front area of the boat.

Remember to be consistent in commands and corrections, and always praise him three times as much when he obeys the command.

Good advice from everyone...and you can't emphasize the command consistency thing enough. Try to keep people who don't have the discipline to train the dog right out of the mix...they only make the job tougher, and harder on the dog if you get frustrated at his confusion. We have several "places" in our house, and they all have their own name (ie, bench, rug, pillow). My lab gets them most of the time, but occasionally she gets stupid and needs to be placed there by hand.

Just remember, one command (and only once) for one result. If you repeat yourself, you lose control.

thanks for the advice. took him twice now first time he was up front with my wife. but he shifted weight too much. second time took my rear dry storage out. and he got that area about enoph to lay down in. did great. only went to the snoho.he will see the sky when it opens back up sept. 1st. i was worried how he would do with a fish at the boat, but he did good though. a little puzzled but did good. hes good on voice camands usually. he knows go to bed. kennel up . and load up.ect. without confusing them. so a few more trips and i should have my winter fishing buddy ready to go. thanks again

Nearly all labs or similar will be wanting to be all the way up in the bow of the boat when you are running....they will be straining over the bow taking in the smells, sounds and sights. That will be a major training issue.
