OK, I have seen a 5 foot ling and will post the pic to prove it. Honestly I am not sure the length as we had to let it go. I know where this fish lives and is probably bigger now. the pic was taken I think three years ago. The story goes like this. Me and two friends went out to go fishing for ling cod. My friend tom (pictured) got a bunch of different jigs to try and I told him to use the one that looked like a sculpin. We were not even past the breakwater, I was driving and Tom wanted to know how to properly jig. So I pulled the boat to the front of the brak and threw it in neutral. I took his rigged rod and casted towards the break and showed him how to work it down the rocks without hanging up. He took the rod and went for it. The fish took it in on his first cast, and by the way he was using a CHEAP spinning set up and I really thought his rod was going to break. When he got the fish next to the boat It was so big that I was not sure what it was, plus I was i little frantic because it would not fit in the net. My other friend put on some gloves and boated the fish. My friend in the pic is 6'2". The tail of the fish is just off the deck. You be the judge.
I dont know if it was 5 feet but I know it was over four. The pic does not do it justice but we were trying to be fast. The fish was released unharmed. Can anyone guess where this was by looking at the background?

I'd say its not five, but 50" plus would be a safe opinion! There all plenty of fish this size and larger hooked and landed every year out here in Neah and La Push, ESPECIALLY in Shore! Crackers can believe everything a book says or some other so called professional in the field who has spent his life in text books and other non hands on sources of info, but reality is, there plenty of them, that is why there is no maximum size in La Push and Neah! NUFF SAID!

Very nice fish guys!
Not a one of them is approaching 6 foot though Chrissy. Hope you don't try to fib like that to your future bride. It could be painful.

Read ur Reg book and once again it will say in there that they grow to six feet, just because u all haven't caught one or even hooked one or don't have the gear that when u do hook one that u can get er done, that dont mean they are not there, cause they are! But, we all love the advice of crackers lol!

I did. I will quote it for you... from page 98;
Quote:
Lingcod Body dark brown, grey or green with mottling on sides. A single long fin on back with only one notch. Large mouth with large teeth. Can reach five feet in length.
Let's see, AK F&W says 5 feet max, and WA F&W says they CAN reach 5 feet. I think that means...
FIVE FEET. Not six. I may be a cracker, but at least I don't tell a tall tale and try to back it up with another tall tale, knowing I would get caught.

The world record ling cod is 81 lb 6 oz. Here's a link to one that was 76 lb, and measured 54". http://www.orioncharters.com/record.htm
With that being said, it doesn't matter what books say, because there are bigger fish out there somewhere that no one has ever seen. They just give an upper end measurement that would hold true for the biggest fish that have been caught so far.
I have no idea if Chris has ever seen a five foot ling cod or not, maybe he has. It doesn't really matter much, except to those looking to make a fool of him.

He said SIX feet, and I think he made a fool of himself all by himself.

Ok six feet, whatever. I'll leave the judgement to those of you who know Chris personally.
Thanks to everyone who offered up advice on my original rod question before the thread got side tracked.

Luke try your medium-heavy salmon stick...purchase a meat stick also. Do the comparison yourself. Simple solution.
Mikal was that big hen linger off of the Magnolia marina in Seattle? There's been one there for years that has been causght and released several times every year. Measures 41 inches....I should know as I got to do that several years ago. She did put a strain on an Allstar 1025C...even had to follow her a bit.

It's all in the mouth. No, not Chris's! Other fish species have the same ability to eat something that seems overly large, like uh, a large mouth bass!

World-record fish caught in Homer Robbie Hammond poses next to his 82.6 pound world-record lingcod caught Friday about 80 miles south of Ninilchik. Photo provided
A 20-year-old angler on his first fishing trip to Alaska caught a world-record lingcod Friday about 80 miles south of Ninilchik.
The large female, caught by Robbie Hammond from Discovery Bay, Calif., weighed 82.6 pounds and measured 55 inches long. It beat the old record fish, caught in 2002 by Charles Curney, by just 1 pound.
"I feel very lucky," said Hammond, who also caught a 124-pound halibut Thursday.
Hammond, a college student in California, was fishing with his dad, Allen, and four of Allen's friends on the one-week trip with Captain Steve's Saltwater Charters and Lodge in Ninilchik. Robbie said he was a last-minute addition to the trip after the fifth of Allen's friends couldn't make it.
His luck continued Friday when the group began fishing near the southern tip of the Kenai Peninsula, and the action started heating up.
"Three rods went down at one time," said Capt. Steve Smith.
Robbie and a friend had hooked into fish at the front of the boat, while Allen had simultaneously caught a monster at the back.
Thinking Allen was hooked into the trophy fish of the three, Smith put the boat in reverse in order to aid its landing.
After chasing Allen's fish for about an hour, the crew finally landed what turned out to be a 210-pound halibut.
Smith then turned his attention back to the front of the boat, where Robbie was still fighting his big fish. As soon as Robbie's lingcod reached the surface, Smith got his first good look.
"I said, 'Holy cow, I think you did it,'" Smith said.
After landing the lingcod and measuring it, Smith knew Robbie had caught something special.
"I said 'This is the one, you got the world record right here on the boat,'" Smith said. "The poor dad with the halibut didn't get any recognition for it."
After landing the big halibut, the world-record lingcod and another 50-pound lingcod, Smith headed north toward Ninilchik and began calling around to find out how to officially measure the lingcod.
If it was going to count in the record books, the fish would have to be weighed on official scales and paperwork would need to be filled out.
After weighing the fish unofficially at his scales in Ninilchik, Smith grabbed the lingcod, Allen and Robbie and drove down to Homer to meet with Alaska Department of Fish and Game biologist Charlie Stock. There they drove to the Homer Halibut Derby Headquarters on the Homer Spit for an official weigh-in.
"He was pretty excited when he got here," Stock said. "It was the biggest lingcod I've ever seen. You could put a basketball in its mouth."
Generally, fish tend to lose moisture and weight the longer they are removed from water.
Nearly five hours after it was caught, including an 80-mile boat ride and a 40-mile car ride in a fish tote, the lingcod still weighed 82.6 pounds.
According to Fish and Game, lingcod are not true cods, but are greenlings and can be found from the Aleutian Islands south to Baja, Calif.
They are common throughout Southeast Alaska, the outer Kenai Peninsula, Kodiak and Prince William Sound and are generally found on rocky reefs from 30 to 330 feet deep.
Lingcod are characterized by a large mouth with 18 sharp teeth and are voracious eaters.
Like halibut, the females of the species are bigger. Stock said the fish likely was about 25 years old.
Back in California, Robbie said he plans to have the fish mounted. He's already been interviewed by a couple of California radio shows and newspapers.
"I absolutely had a great time up there," he said. "My friends are pretty jealous." ----------
Nope Chris. Not even the new world record is 60 inches AKA 5 feet.

Good information about all the rods.
I agree that there are record fish out there that we haven't seen and there are also records that could be broke today if people entered their catches. Take a look at all the records and see if you've eaten any records. I have, the Yellow Perch record for one. I've seen Carp that would break the US record many times. Are there 6 foot or 7 foot Lings? I don't know so anyone want to go look for one? I've already got a rod and I can catch bait.
