The boys and I headed over to the dry side to get our first of two elk and connected with this little elk. Not the biggest, but the rules of the damage hunt are antlerless only, and there it was, so it was "meat down".
Hunter was along on the push with me while Ryan bravely hung out in the truck playing the Nintendo DS. I was amazed that Hunter was able to keep up with me once we bumped the elk. He was there at the initial shot, and handled the kill shot very well. He even helped in part of the gutting by cutting through the trachea.
22 bags of ice and 130 miles later, there is fresh meat in the fridge waiting to be cut up tomorrow.
One tag left, and it will be bigger.

Nice one Jim! I can only hope for that in a few years.
Dropped both boys off for their first day of Hunter Education this morning. My friend Dan's son passed at the age of 7, and Ryan is 8 going into 3rd grade and reads at the 5th grade level, so I'm sure he'll do fine. He won't start hunting this year even if he passes, but he wanted the challenge.
