I was just curious if anyone uses circle hooks when they are out trolling for salmon, and why or why not. I know the whole thing about hooking fish in the corner of the mouth, but I was just wondering if it decreased the number of hookups.
I was just curious 'cause anything that might make it easier to get the Dogfish off of Thomas' line would be fantastic!

Kind of thought they might not since the Salmon seem to slash at the lures more than grab it and run.

I've used them for mooching with some success, but I agree they'd probably not work well for lures or trolling.

The plugs I have from a trip to Campbell River a decade ago had a semi-circle hook and worked fine for kings up there. There's some other hooks out there that I want to try. Cliff making it easier for Drunken Thomas may not be easy.

Not worried about making it easier for him. I am usually the one that winds up with his head over the side of the boat trying to get the hooks out of those grouchy little things while they are trying to slap me around.
Do wonder though if it would reduce the number of shakers we hooked up. We basically checked lines every 5 minutes yesterday just to keep them clear of 'em.

Haven't tried them in the salt, but they work fine for salmon and steelhead flies in freshwater. The trick is to not set the hook, - just come tight to the fish once you feel weight (easier said than done). I've found that you miss a few takes, but the fish you do hook stay on.
Yeah I'd say they were better used with bait since that's what they were designed for, - BUT (this is pure speculation on my part) if I were trolling with them I would set my drag VERY loose. All they have to do is get the hook in their mouth long enough to let it seat in the corner of the mouth (don't know how this works but it does). Let 'em peel some line then tighten up!

I have used them for Salmon in the river and they work pretty good you dont snag any fish at all and when you work them they are done

I wonder how they would work for boondogging or sidedrifting? Seems like they would work fine as you are letting the fish set the hook.

I was using a bead and yarn for springers and I started reeling in cause my line went slack and the fish took off.
Gamakatsu has circle hooks that have the slanted eye, so maybe you can look into that.
