Engaging 4 wheel drive while in reverse question
      #299354 - 08/27/07 09:02 PM

I had a bizarre thing happen last weekend with my 2004 GMC 2500 HD 4X4 automatic while backing up my trailer at the Muk launch to take my boat out. I was lined up and backing into my slot and while in reverse I thought that I will put it into 4 wheel drive since the tide was way low. Well what happened was the truck surged while in reverse-it accelerated. I slammed the brake and let off and the truck did it again. I slammed the brake again. The thoughts of what could of happened went through my mind. I took it out of 4 wheel and backed up without any reaccurance. Then when ready to pull the boat out I put it into 4 wheel. Anyone ever have this happen? Or know why this would of happened?

Reverse is a much lower gear. Sometimes it is hard to get in. I had the Chevy that I owned last do exactly the same thing. It was a 2004 btw.

Ive never owned a GMC. However, it would not surprise me if most of the 4x4 have the same feature. I had a 1984 little ranger 4x4. I took it out hunting birds on some logging roads etc. I put it in 4Lo and I was amazed, I did not have to touch the throttle. I had a stick shift on that truck. It would not stall and it would reduce power when the going got easy. It was fantastic control.
