'fool(an apt moniker),
I was/am simply responding to a Witch Hunt and have zero interest in a Popularity Poll.
What Urban Dwellers do,day in/day out, interests me less than none.
It is a constant,in that those that initially want to tell me things, end up asking a myriad of questions. I'll often go out of my way to help the genuine and am troubled little,in rubbing the noses of others into the obvious.
I've steeped in much, but never did suffer fools gladly........................

Timber said: Although Nick I had to get a kick out of the "20ft base" please let me know when you find one that big without going to the redwood forest I have cut timber all over washington, oregon, idaho, alaska and northern calif. and never seen a tree 20ft dbh. But then again they never cut me loose in the redwood forest or it would be nothin but stumps now
I grew up in the redwood forests of California. I've seen trees that would make a Washington logger cry at trying to cut down.
The 20' base I was referring to was an exaggeration btw.

'Chris,
Read the Thread start to finish. Some misguided malcontents, talk copiously out their ass and those of like IQ follow suit with glazed eyes in Sheeply fixation.
I speak matter of factly, because facts matter and do not feel compelled to apologize for the truth and the results they continually bear.
I've caught an inordinate number of exemplary fish, everywhere I've been and that covers more than a few locales.
Being very good,doesn't happen accidentally.
Much to that, irregardless of your embracing that fact.............

I've cut much Redwood and the vast percentage of that PL holdings. Redwoods are easy,in that they inhabitat favorable topography, are a very softwood and they are not very dense.
I've never cut a Spruce over 14' diameter, though I'm still looking in eager anticipation and would do so for free(and in consumate fashion)..................

BigStick, I guess it isn't as hard when using step boards. Cutting down some of those 2,000 year old monsters at the actual base would probably not even be feasible with most standard old growth logging equipment. But what do I know, i'm a welder, not a logger.

I've tower logged several units on the OP where I ran up against Spruce butt cuts in the 14 foot size range. Each one was actually a hollow shell. Each time part of me was pissed as the challenge of getting them to the landing if they were solid would have been a test of my crews skill.

Springboarding merits, are dependent upon a myriad of factors.
Firstly, the Grade of the butt log and secondly, the amount of time saved, getting same into your hat.
Grade comes first, because that is finance. Oftentime,flutes/bark seams are to be avoided at all costs,as is an off-centered heart,as well as a number of other viable concerns. Heart check, sap rot, yada, yada.
I'm more apt to leave the board behind and reap the available volume,at ground level, via superlative tooling. That is usually a far faster way to make logs and time IS money,on a Bushel Show.

Nick it isn't actually that difficult with modern equipment...just takes a bit longer.

Never cut much in the way of Piss Fir...nor lament that fact.
Have slummed towards/over the Cascades now and again and have thrown some lunker Sugar Pine in the hat.
Much prefer the volume and control inherent to Doug Fir................

Feel free to correct me and rattle the names of the Lady Cutters that you happen to know.

Stick I was never a cutter...my younger brother chose that path after several years on the rigging. All of my experience was logging road construction and the rigging. But I always enjoyed watching the fallers working a unit of big trees ahead of us. Cut...cut...and cut some more then break out the jacks and carefully finish cut as the tree was jacked over. Then it was my job to figure out how to get those logs to the landing and loaded. Biggest solid Spruce was around 12 feet, cedar around 16 feet, never tackled a Doug Fir above 10 feet. Hardest core thing I ever had to do to get a large piece of timber to the landing was to run strawline out for the road for the layout and drop the skyline from the tailhold and run it up to the log. We shackled the skyline around the butt end and yarded it in old school. Hooked everything back up and went back to modern logging. Yarder engineer( a young guy) was freaked out by the whole process.

People are entitled to their opinions, but i do see some malcontents and what people need to realize is that this is the damn internet people, the man has a valid point! Unless you hear it from the horses mouth, don't consider it valid! I have been following this post for quite sometime bigstick and in some ways i see you are the same type of individual as I! In some cases, there have been some misguided malcontents written about myself by others, but we as MEN have risen above them and friendship has prevailed! We all share a love for the same thing the great outdoors! If it weren't for the great outdoors, i wouldn't be the young man i am today and would've have such a vast memory bank of experiences i have shared with my family and friends and neither would you my friend! I see great young hearts in the pictures of your young ones and it brings back memories of my young child hood with my grandfather and uncles! They taught me young, but i teach them today, i don't shower myself with my own pride or predjudice but rather pass on the knowledge i know to the next generation or the less fortunate. It would be more than great if you could share some of yours with some of us and learn from each other on here. This board is not Piscatorial Pursuits, not Ifish, not gamefishin.com, but STEELHEADER.NET and in my beliefs, we have a stronger community than any other board. We have all gained some of our knowledge from someone else wether it be family, friends, or foe and i know that doesn't disclude you, but its not like any of us invented everything we know! I personally believe that if you were at a flotilla with us, you'd probably be sitten there drinking the frosty beverage of ur choice, rantin like the rest of us a$$hole and lettin some testosterone fly! When i first started postin on these boards, i thought i was all that and a bag of chips, but i've learned otherwise. For you can never stop learning and never stop better yourself, soak it up, you only live once. On that note, i hope we all can enjoy your post and you can enjoy ours and make some friends! Now, i think i have a pic for you bigstick!

I did know a gal called Peppermint Patty who tended bar at the Cocktail lounge in Amanda Park(Lake Quinalt)...about 6 foot 5 inches tall....she eradicated an entire rigging rat crew from Mayr Brothers in about 10 minutes. Seven young tough men chose the wrong person to abuse....I evacuated my rigging crew to the parking lot a few minutes beforehand to observe and learn an important lesson. Gawd them wre the days of my youth!

Were we setting in close quarters,I'd of opened up with a rather impressive knockout of the douche bag that muttered the lies that started this Thread. Would have probably kicked a lung out of him after the fact,if only because I could...but that's how I roll.
Then I would have been happy to put on a Fishing/Hunting Exhibition,if only because those things come as easily.
Good call...think I'll pour a toddy.............

I always enjoyed talking one of the younger new chokerdogs into going over and picking a fight with the cutters in the taverns.
Actually most of the cutters I worked around were Tarheels....dumber than dirt they were.
