not trying to thread steal here. but i was told on anchore in nav. water you were able to hunt from. a guy told me this on the snohomish last week. and i was wondering if this was true, as well as on the skykomish? don't want to get into trouble but don't want to miss opertunities also.

That is a great question. I was told that as long as you are not under mechanical (Gas or Electric) power you can shoot. Rowing and drifting are shoot situations.
Anyone had any experience otherwise?

If you are going to hunt, you might want to read the regs first. The rules are written out very plainly with no mention of an anchor. Don't believe everything you hear when it comes to laws. In other words, don't believe me, look it up and be safe in knowing you are within the law. Bill

We drift hunt ducks and geese all the time. The regs say as long as all forward movement from motorized propulsion has ceased. Some law enforcement people will cite you if you are still moving (even at a drift). On jerk insisted we turn upriver and move that way to demonstrate when we changed direction to a downstream drift. I told him to cite me, as it would never hold up in court. Of course I had a credible witness in my boat at the time...

I'm pretty sure that's a "universal" rule, under the "Migratory Fowl" regulations put out by the Feds. Also, when you shut off a motor, you must wait for the "forward progress" of the boat to stop.

-Hunt wildlife from a vehicle (except authorized disabled hunters) or from a boat propelled by a motor, unless the boats motor is shut off and progress due to the motor has stopped.

That's pretty much the wording of the Idaho regs. I believe BobK is correct, in that it's a federal law ased on migratory bird regs...

The Skagit Flats had at one time a specific regulation that required snow goose hunters to anchor up. That might be the source of confusion with some of the folks in Washington.

I have asked the question point blank to a game warden (when I was 14) about this method of hunting. Just then some ducks got up out of the streamside brush and we blasted them. He said "Were we moving because of the motor?" and I said "No, you shut it off a while ago." Then he just turned to his dog and gave the command.
This starts a whole other round of questions though. That being, what to do in case of a cripple? I use a dog, but in some situations, especially in river hunting, it is way easier and sometimes safer to chase a cripple in the boat.
I have no problem firing up and running down a cripple and even shooting from a moving boat if it will get the duck. I figure I would rather take the ticket if that is the call, than waste game. I have no problem with the fair chase rules, but I have a big problem with wasting animals.

I typically run downstream past the duck or goose, turn back in to the current and kill the motor, then step to the front of the boat and swat it with #6 steel. If the bird is upstream, I stop downstream, and again let the current kill momentum, and step to the front of the boat. By the time I'm at the front of the boat forward movement from the motor has ceased.
Generally any Game Warden worth his salt would be lenient in these cases, but there is always the one jerk...

Yeah, we do that most of the time, too. There are times when the thing is just popping to the surface every now and then (especially greenheads) and you just have to be ready. I actually chased one that way for about a mile down the river before I got him. We flushed several flocks we would have liked to have got into, but had to get the crip.

We used to float shoot ducks on the Yakima through town from a green Sevylor. Awesome way to get in some good shooting, until they put in that damn Yakima Greenway trail right next to the river. The Sunday walkers were a little nervous seeing us float by...
