For steelies, definitely the big summer runs as they just get wings and fly and the warm water gives them added life. Probably the first steelie I ever hooked and lost was my best memory because it made me aware of just how nasty these fish can be getting air and running for cover and it was a small one. Gotta just love them all as the steelies are a special fish.
I tried to net a big summer run for my buddy Mike that was particularly nasty. We'd hooked it(I was on the oars) on a plug (green pirate) and after a long battle, the hog got near enough the boat for me to think about a first look(let the fish see the net for the first time). The fish rolled beside the boat momentarily and literally started gnawing at the plug. It straightened out 4 hooks on the two trebles, spit the plug, rolled away, leaped a couple times, once particularly high with a wicked tail slap, stuck its' tongue out at us and vanished.

hottest steelhead... well it was my only steelhead, about 6-7 lb hen on the sky last summer. What was special about it was that it was on my birthday, skipper had a toothache, but gutted it out for me during a 4 hour drift. Had his grandson along. As soon as the fish was netted, grandson wanted to SHOOT my fish with his bb gun. My protests went unheeded, and he shot it anyway. Skipper said don't worry, it was only one pump. Inlaws almost broke a tooth on the bb when eating piece of smoked fish. It was still a memorable experience, no hard feelings. I only hope that there are more steelies out there with my name on them!
