First blood for big guy!
      #301009 - 09/09/07 09:33 PM

Hunter (11) and Ryan (8) both passed their hunter ed last month so we finally got to head out on our first hunt. We took a trip east of the mountains to a spot I always find grouse. Unfortunately there were a number of bow hunters out there stirring things up, so we didn't have the place to ourselves. Luckily we were still able to locate one nice blue grouse, Hunter's shot was on the money, and he showed no hesitation.

We ended up seeing 4 nice mule deer bucks, 16 turkeys, 25 elk, and a squirrel. Ryan asked if he could shoot the squirrel, but he had to settle for some paper targets with his Crickett .22.

It cost me a tank and a half of gas and some part of my exhaust system, but it was well worth it.

Looks like a great first trip.

What's that 20ga single? Looks like a great starter shotgun.

Nice work!

Dogfish, what kind of shells are you running through the snake charmer? I used one on grouse a few years ago and I couldn't get them to die at more than reasonable ranges. I thought it would be cool for hiking (and it was great), but I kept swatting birds and then they would get up and fly away. I must have lost 4 of them.

Shooting Grouse with a .410 is much harder then with a 20 gage. It appears that Hunter has been practicing.
You got him a mountain bike for deer hunting yet? I can’t wait to see his first deer tied to the bike like his Dad did.

Remington #4's, 3" shells. We had him practice on pop cans, and told him to aim low. He got pretty good with those, and we started hanging them in trees for variety. We had issues breaking clays with the 2.5" shells, but I was smoking targets with the 3" shells. The gun we have is the "Tamer" with a full choke, compared to the "Snake Charmer" that has a cylinder bore. That might be the issue.

We'll see about deer. I got him a ML tag for this year because we can hunt right behind our property (like on the property line) for either sex deer during the late season, and there are 7 different deer who visit us regularly. I'm saving those deer for him. Next year I'll change over to modern rifle and put them in for some youth tags.

Yep, that would be the issue. I brought that thing along for a hike/grouse hunt/alpine lake fishing trip one fall. I got made fun of sooooo bad by my buds for 'missing' that many grouse on the ground. I almost threw the gun off a cliff.
