I just purchased a 4-wheel drive station wagon (aka SUV), and now need a light duty utility trailer to haul gear to hunting camp.
I'm looking at buying one of those cheap inexpensive trailers through either Fred Meyer or Harbor Freight. Anybody have any experience with one of these? The Fred Meyer version has 8" wheels, which must spin at about a billion rpm when you're going 80mph. I like the price and portability, however.
Any ideas?

On a side note there Turbo, you probably shouldn't drive 80 with a trailer on the back or your suv  . Are you sure that Toyota can go that fast?

I bought one from Home Depot a little while back. Pretty sturdy little unit. Think I paid like $600.00 for it. You can get quite a pile of gear in it and so far no problems with bearings, etc.

Mine wasn't so impressive. Everything on it was light duty, and while it lasted for 2 years as a makeshift DB trailer it showed every mile. I'd pony another $500-1,000 and get a trailer that could handle a ton or more.

 It doesn't take long for the "stuff" to add up, and if you get a critter, like an elk, you're up another 3-400#.
I'd be looking for at least 12 in. wheels too, as a minimum!!!

I just let it roll at 80 going downhill so I have enough speed to get to the top of the next one

Pez- We use all sizes of First Interstate trailers for gear and a billion decoys, never had an issue. They are light, inexpensive and fairly tough. I would seriously worry about bearings. Nothing ruins a trip like leaving your gear on the side of the road. Another reason I don't like most of them is because the wheels are situated under the bed and I can't see them in the mirror to catch it in time to just tighten or replace bearings. Just my 2 cents

C&M, if you recall, you did the same thing to me 2 weeks ago . I'll probably get skunked, because I'm bringing the 2 handed bug rod, but at least I'll be out of town. Oh, and I'll look really cool all tied up in my line like some mutant spider attacked me...

Actually I have been threatening to go out on an (american) charter company out of there. The weather is not going to be to bad so I may give it a try. I know they catch sails, dolphin, and the typical warm waters out of there. Good luck up north, don't hurt yourself.

The $300 and $400 are meant for around town and lack tire size but the Home Depot trailers are nice. This is coming from a welder that has built over 30 trailer. I almost bought one but I have a half built trailer I need to finish.
Also the light duty trailer have zero ground clearance and you will drag it all the time.

The kicker on the cheap trailers is thay they fold in half for storage. Again, hopefully not when you're going 80 down the interstate.
I have to say that would be pretty handy, but I think all your advice is right - these are trailers meant for occasional use, short distances, and good roads.
Now I just have to decide if that will suffice for my needs.
Thanks to everybody for your advice - I'm happy to hear more if you have it. I'll look at the Home Depot trailer, that seems to be a common theme here.

Pez, the brand name is Snowbear. The one I got is the 6000 model. 12' wheels 2,200lb axel rating. Both the front and back gates flip over and re-install to make either a ramp, or a large flat cargo area. I'm told you could haul two four wheelers on it configured this way.....
