Are you ready? Do you do anything different to get in shape for hunting season? If your season is already over, did you prepare for it before hand? In previous years I didn't do much, maybe extended my morning dog walks by another 30 minutes. In the last year I've changed to a job that has me in a chair most of the day, so conditioning is more important for this season. I recently found a great place to run/hike stairs. It's 50 steps and I do 15-20 sets in 25-30 minutes. I wear my hunting boots and my lumbar pack with water jugs in it for weight. Doing stairs 2-3 days a week should have me ready.
Our #1 hunting area is steep for the first 30 minutes on the way in. These are pics of my dad last month on the way to check the trail cams.
On that trip we did some exploring and connected some old trails. All that [**whoops**] was steep too. If we use our late season permits, the place we expect to score starts with a long steep logging road behind a locked gate.

As usual, no. So I'll suffer on the first few hunts, and suffer from leg cramps and a sore back, but HEY! THAT'S THE PRICE OF FUN!!

I went biking with the boys on a regular basis, and a summer of clearing the brush from our property has helped me lose about 15lbs.

I started Karate a few months ago and I'm in a lot better shape than I used to be, so I might be in shape to hunt, but cannot afford to hunt (yet). Yet again, I'm saying, "maybe next yr..."
Then again I don't know jack about hunting, so I'd need someone to show me the ropes, so I'll save up to afford a guide. Apparently, it's not as simple as just making that click-BANG noise...

I've been going for hikes in the local foothills. Just in case I see a chukar, I take my shotgun. Hasn't happened so far, but it's a lot more fun to be hunting than exercising...

That is the truth. If you are going somewhere to do something you enjoy, like hiking into a lake to fish, checking trail cams, grouse hunting, cutting firewood, or whatever it is, exercise becomes a sidebar. Better to get exercise when you think that you aren't really exercising.

Nahhhh, sweat is good for you. What was that line I saw on a USMC recruiting poster? "Pain is weakness leaving your body"
Well, OK, maybe for the young guys...
OK really dumb question here, but what is the least strenuous (aka least likely to tweak my back) form of game animal hunting to start out with? I don't have a problem hiking over hill and dale to find, track, and shoot the critter, but the idea of hauling it out on my back, over successive trips... Wonder if you can you hire an illegal alien to do the hauling (Kidding)

The easiest and best way to start off is small game hunting. Gets you into the woods, climbing, and carrying a shotgun.
Doesn't matter if it's birds, bunnies, squirrels, or "whatever", it will get you in shape, and make for some FUN shooting! Usually, much more action than on a big-game hunt, lots of fun, and the "kitchen results" are really worthwhile!
A GOOD way to start off the season.

I won't haul one out on my back again. Drag sleds (Cabela's "deer sleigher") help a ton, even if it's used to drag halves or quarters. My dad and I have taken several out on a deer sleigher. My deer last year was taken out on a sled in halves. Dogfish has posted pics of a good way to haul deer on a bike. I've used a bike with a framed pack strapped to it to get boned meat out. A good pack with boned out meat is still better than trying to throw a whole or even half animal over your shoulder.
Obviously, bigger animals will take more work. Deer are big enough for me.

Season snuck up on me this year. Been running fairly consistantly since July and I've got decent wind, What I dont have is much leg strength/endurance. Went on a scouting trip weekend before last and my legs felt like I'd been hunting elk for a week. Gonna be a tough one this year.

Been doing an hour to hour and half of cardio work 5 or 6 days a week since July. I wear a heart rate monitor so that I keep my rate up while working out, gets harder and harder to get into the target range the more I work out. Leave in 17 days for a 11 day hunt in Montana. Then home for a few days of Elk hunting and thne late buck. Can't wait for season to open.

Hell, all I've got to do is visit the "Droolers Den" and my "heart rate monitor" goes into overdrive.

You can't correlate the ease of transition, from opportunity to opportunity...when Season rolls 12 months out of the year?
I find it suprising, that you'd take time to denote your inability to discern that.
Somehow,I think you are full of similar suprises, amongst other things.....................

Let me guess, you shot a Doe out of a field once?!? That is might powerful testimony. Give or take.
You'd best hit the treadmill,in case you can't quite back the truck up to the next Doe dropped in the field.

It's a good thing I did some conditioning. Today would have been even longer if I hadn't. Meat was on the ground at 9:15.
The work started soon after...
First hind quarter done...
After the rear quarters, moved forward to the backstraps...
The front quarters were treated just like the rears.
The first pack load was ready to go at 11:00...
I knew I might be doing this so I was prepared. Had a sheet to cool the meat on and keep it clean, two good knives (only used one), a large plastic bag to line my pack, and rope to act as a second hand while cutting. Oh, and lots of water.
I was too far in and there was too much steep terrain for a drag, even with a sled. Plus, I was by myself. I can't say enough about adjusting your pack to put the weight on your hips.
Made two trips to get it all out. My legs started getting pretty heavy about half way up to retrieve the second batch. Finally got the second load to the bottom at 1:30. It rained the whole time.
