broken rod tip advice... new
      #304785 - 10/09/07 07:11 AM

Broke the tip of my sturgeon rod about 3 1/2" down, should i just get a new tip and glue it on, do i do anything to the broken top on the rod and what kind of glue? it's a 'hand crafted' rod by 'star rods', usa, model E870C, 10/40 if that helps - or, is there anybody around lewiston/clarkston that could possibly fix it??... thanks,,,fishingmom

Pretty simple to fix, new tip + superglue = fishing again (just 3.5" shorter )

You can do it!

My advice is to get a new tip that fits, then use epoxy, not super-glue to affix the tip-top. Superglue does not flex at all, and epoxy does. The tip of an oversize rod gets torqued on pretty hard. Having that flexibility is a bonus. Plus it is easier to replace the tip with epoxy, and you might get it broken some day.

I quit using the hot glue type tip adhesive, because in the summer it would get soft and the tip would spin on a 100+ degree day.

FishingMom, I do not understand why, if the rod was a two piece rod, you would want to glue the two pieces together? But if it is a two piece rod you should be able to just go the manufacturer and get another tip section. If it was a one piece rod you are going to have to either repair the break with a fiberglas sleeve or get a new blank. With a heavy rod like that a fiberglass sleeve may not look pretty but usually works reasonably well.

Mojo,
Ferrule cements or hot melt glues are available with a range of melting temperatures. Generally the lighter the color of the ferrule cement the higher the melting temperature.

harry - the rod is a 1 piece, i'll just find a new top eyelet that the line goes thru and glue it on, wasn't sure if thats what should be done but now it doesn't sound too difficult ....castaway, i had it laying on the boat floor and stepped on it getting ready to launch, just stupid, its not a good way to start day - fishingmom

Yes Chris, I scuffed the tip, and I use what I thought was high temp ferrule cement. At least that's what they told me when I bought it.

In the summer, when it is 105 in the canyon, and you have a black rod with a black tip-top, it gets warm in the sun. The glue doesn't melt, it just softens enough that an 8 foot sturgeon can spin the tip.

fishingmom,
Ah, now I understand what you want to do and you got good advice above. Sorry for introducing some confusion.

Mojo,
You can get ferrule cement that has a melting temperature that I think is as high as 180 degrees F. Much higher than that and the resin in the blank will start to give. By the way I noticed that I said that the lighter the color the higher the temperature. That is wrong, sorry I guess that I wasn't think AGAIN. The darker the color the higher the melting temp. will be. Flex Coat has some new ferrule cement that is amber in color that has a higher melting temperature and has worked well for me.

wfff - i might have to take you up on the offer, couldn't find one to fit today, what if i'd send you the broken off top, then maybe if you have something a bit bigger then the broken end to fit on the rod?? do you build rods or have a shop? ...thanks, fishingmom

Harry,
Do you sell the good high temp cement, or have a good source mail order? Things are a bit slim around my parts for that kind of stuff...

Mojo,
No, I do not sell it but I know that Angler's workshop stocks it and it is pretty cheap. A couple of dollars if I remember correctly.
Their e-mail and telephone numbers are on the their web site but if you cannot find them I will look them up for you.
Just a suggestion, I run it through a hot melt glue gun onto a slick surface and get a bunch of different diameter pieces of it. Then when I put on a tip I always have a piece that fits into the particular tip that I need.

That is what i have sorta resorted to doing, but i just melt some of the tip top adhesive, get a good ball of it on my tip top, then when it drys enuff, roll it in a ball with my fingers and cram some down the tip top tube. Add a little heat to the top (don't take to much) slide her down!
