Vedder Report
      #305204 - 10/12/07 06:01 PM

Hit the Vedder this morning and knew it was going to be a special day when I realized I forgot my passport. The water was absolutely dialed. Fished below the Crossing and didn't see much going on at any of my stops until I worked my way down to the upper canal. Thats where the party was happening. Springs, Chums, Coho...the gang was all there along with many of the folks from the lower mainland and a Yank or two. I Managed to find Mr. Hooknose. My Rogue 964 won the battle but paid the ultimate price. I'll be re-tieing a new tip half...hopefully before the steelies get here. I had to have the Wife snap a couple of pics of the rod killer. Maybe some day I'll figure out how to post them.

My tutorial on posting pics on steelheader.net...

First thing about posting pictures is sizing them properly. I use irfanview for this. It is a freeware program that I downloaded after googling it. I open the picture I want to post in irfanview. I then select Image in the taskbar, then resize/resample. I then choose 500 width (make sure pixels is selected not inches, and preserve aspect ratio is selected in the bottom block), and 50 in the DPI block. Then click OK and save it to my desktop (so I can find it).

I then open the PHOTO GALLERY page on Steelheader.net. Select upload photos in the task bar below the pictures in the Recent Posts - All Categories. Click on the browse button, find your desktop in the look in block at the top, then find your picture on your desktop. Click on your picture then click on open. There will be a path to your picture displayed in the block next to the Photo to upload: block. Next, click on the upload/submit button.

Click on the process files button, and it will be uploaded to your gallery. You are almost done. the last step is posting your photo in your post. The way I do it is go to wherever you want your photo in your post, and click on the image button on the bottom of the post. Then in a separate window open up the photo gallery, and click on your photo. Near the bottom of the information, you'll find a block titled UBB CODE. Next to it you'll find something that looks similar to this...

Copy all the data other than the blocks, and paste them into the block that opened when you clicked on image in your post. Then submit your post and it should have a picture in it. You can put as many pictures in a post as you want using this method. You can also post pictures hosted on other sites, by just copying the URL of the photo. If you have any questions, feel free to holler at me.

Thanks Mojo for the pic download lesson. I hope this works. Heres the fish that folded my favorite steelhead rod in half.

Hey Iceshark, who told you the Vedder is blown? I fished up there this past weekend and conditions couldn't have been better. There aren't as many springs kegged up this year as usual because the water has been up since September, but there's still plenty of them around if you know where to look.

There's still a good amount of bright coho around too. There is always less chum on pink years.

Then he should have posted that in the Vancouver daily newspapers Mojo.

Outta the 5000 give or take anglers that fish the Vedder on a given weekend in October... I'll bet only a miniscule percentage read about it on Steelheader.net.

It IS the best kept secret on the Lower Mainland after all!

I've fished it a few times, and I drove from southern Idaho. If it's so secret that I knew about it, I'm guessing everyone else in the world does...

My secret is that a few fly fisherman each lost a king Fri AM and caught so many chums that they had sore arms.

I'm amused if there was an attempt to keep the Vedder a secret. We'll never confuse this flow with anyone's favorite Zipper Lip. If there are any keys to the Vedder they involve how you approach the fishery knowing that there WILL be crowds. Remember what you've learned over the years about what fish do when they've been spooked (its almost Halloween ya know!). This is especially true of steelies. I like it when there is a nice run that packes in 25% or more of the guys fishing the entire lower Vedder. It beats having the guys spread out all over. Meanwhile I'll fish the water that not many others suspect hold fish. Food for thought...tight lines.

Secret is far from the truth when it comes to the chedder. Which is too bad. It's such a GREAT river. Access is WAY too easy and there are WAY too many fish, thus bringing the crackers out in droves. It's the reason I refer to it as: "The River I love to Hate".
But, if you don't mind hiking a little, you can usually find a stretch to yourself. Going Mid-Week also helps.

Fished it for years, even caught one or two fish. Not had problems with crowds as long as you avoid a few notorious spots. Hiking helps. Dad doesn't hike, as he has needed a hip replacement for several yrs now. He doesn't have issues with crowds either, but then he doesn't much fish on wknds.

I'm fortunate that my job enables me to get out mid-week. I don't think I've ever hit it on a weekend...at least that I can remember. Fishhog, I'm with ya man, "The river I love to hate." So true...so true. Yet, year in and year out it produces AND it stays in shape when other local rivers go out. Given the choice, I'd rather face fewer fish and fewer people on the Gunnesack, but the Vedder has its place.
