I need a cape!
      #305247 - 10/12/07 09:57 PM

I just received as a birthday present my grandpas Winchester 94 32special. I want to keep it on the wall below a nice 4x4 buck that he shot with it...however I need a cape the cape needs to come from a coast blacktail that is 3point or better. I can pay, trade or just take it off your hands. So if you get a nice buck but not so big that you want to mount it yourself I would appreciate you thinking of me.

Thanks,

doc

Love and cherish that gun! It's part of your "roots"!

Is it one of the old 1894 saddle ring carbines, or one from the '50s or early '60s? Both of those are especially nice guns. They had a longer forearm than the "post-63" models.

Interesting cartridge, the .32 Special. Seems that Winchester (in the late 1890s) had a bunch of .32-40 chambered (blackpowder cartridge) barrels they made for the 1894 model. But the .30-30 smokeless round was selling like crazy, and they were afraid to get stuck with 'em, as they were an old black powder round. So they simply rechambered the barrels with a .30-.30 chamber reamer, and VOILA! They had a .32 version of the .30-30! They christened it a .32 Special, and claimed that "some hunters prefer a larger diameter bullet"!

I actually owned an original .32-40 Model 1894 rifle at one time, a good, accurate rifle but with lousy ballistics, and after a couple of years with that, converted it to .30-30. Hell, all it took was a new barrel and a couple of cartridge guides for the receiver, which Winchester sold for $20 or so back then!

Actually, the .30-30 and .32 Spec. are "peas in a pod", and the only difference is that the old standard 1-14" rifling of the .32-40 is marginal for the .32 Special, even though they carried it on as the spec for the cartridge. The differences between the .30-30 and the .32 Special is only 13 thousandths of an inch in width!

In well-worn rifles, the .32 Special loses accuracy very quickly, while a .30-30 (1-10" twist) will still shoot very well. That's what SHOULD have been used on the .32 Spec.

Anyway, any difference in effectiveness between the two cartridges is a figment of someone's imagination.

But I'd still like to have one, for old time's sake, as I grew up with these cartridges, and listened to many long-winded arguments in Deer Camp between the two cartridges as the "old timers" ranted and raved about their "favorite gun"!

Hey Bob, thanks for the info. I ran the serial number last night and it was manufactured in 1929 making it 78 years old. Last animal grandpa shot with it was a spike elk when I was in college. He shot it free hand at 150 yards and hit it right below the ear......where he shot everything.

Now back to the ballistic story....are you saying that I can shoot 30-30 rounds through it??

NO! While a .30-30 would chamber and shoot OK, because the BORE diameter is too large, they wouldn't be stabilized and have lousy accuracy.

Hey, the .32 Special is a good cartridge on its own, and just use .32 Specials in it! All I am saying is that from a ballistic viewpoint, the two cartridges are very much alike.

By the date of manufacture, it's probably a saddle ring carbine. (A lot of guys removed 'em, as they would jingle and make noise when you are stalking.)
