I just found a field full of shaggy manes on my way to work this morning. I picked a few to bring in for pos ID and when I opened a young one up it had some really small bugs size of mites. How in the heck do you get those off before cooking? Or do you even worry about them. Yesterday behind my house I found a mess of parasols. I cant believe how many edible mushrooms are in this state. Now I just need to get someone to help me find chantrelles as so far I have found not a one of those.

I found four Amanita muscaria yesterday. I left them alone.

A very quick cold water rinse then pat dry on some towels will take care of the bugs.

Make sure those are Shaggies and not Inky Caps if you drink any booze at all. Won't kill you but you will lose your desire for beer quickly.

I found these the other day but now that you wrote something about inky caps you make me wonder. I didn’t pick um because they had that black [**whoops**] on top, I just leave those and look for others. I always ask my grandpa if I ever have a second thoughts on a shroom what do you think goose? i thought for sure they were shaggies.

Without more pics I have to say that the one in that pic is possibly an Inky Cap. The Inky Cap has the same chemical that alcohol detox centers use aka Anabuse. Any consumption of alcohol 24 hours before or 24 hours after consumption of Inky Caps may result in a free but miserable treatment to make you give up booze. The reaction varies from person to person and the amount consumed. Some people will not have a reaction. The amount of booze consumed resulting in a reaction might only be a swallow of beer. Won't kill you but I suspect you get the idea of what you will endure. The cap on a shaggy mane should go further down the stem than the one in your pic.

The little ring on the bottom of the mushroom in the pic looks like that was where the cap might have started but I'm not sure, they were in the open and had some rain on them for some time, so I thought they were just going bad. I need to do some more reading on mushrooms, but I thought that was a good giveaway for the start of the cap. Dustin

I very much recommend reading up on mushrooms. I have one tasty species in my area that I have yet to try because of an identification problem. It's called the Man on Horseback...basically an all yellow mushroom that is easily identified from all other shrooms...problem is that another species within the Genus is not edible and I have yet to find someone to personally show me the minute difference between the two. I find tons of them locally and the books say that the edible one is excellent but until an actual expert shows me I cannot even trust the books.
Other fun things to explore with shrooms is their use for dying fibers. I like the idea of learning how to do such things.
