What do you guys know about Admiral Boletes? new
      #306233 - 10/21/07 10:41 PM

Well, I've yet to find a single chantrelle on the new place even though it looks like ideal ground.

What we have found are 3 kinds of boletes, the possible kings (from the other post), some grayish brown ones (maybe b. aureus), and a nice patch of what we think are admirals.

Don't have a pic yet but here are the matching Admiral features:

>Dark reddish-brown cap with a velvety texture.
>Cap margin turned in.
>Yellowish pore surface, depressed near stem.
>Reddish-brown stripes on smooth, somewhat reticulated stem.
>Found growing on and near a rotting log under Doug firs.

Features in question:

>Stem and cap flesh yellowish.
>Some blue bruising near base of stem.

Based on these features I'm 95% sure their Admirals, but still some question. I am sure it's a bolete and not a leccinum because the stem doesn't have any scabers.

I was brave (or stupid) enough to saute a small piece in butter and taste it (then spit it out). Haven't had any ill effects (yet) but it was damn delicious! I'd NEVER try this with any gilled mushroom BTW!
