I just had a friend move up to Glide near Roseburg, and we want to do some winter steelhead fishing. Anybody know what the best times in the fall are to fish for big steelies, and good bait recommendations for the Ump?

Greg, summer run fish hang out in the river till spring then spawn. Winter run fish come in and spawn after spending less time in the river, thus (some speculate) have a higher survival to return to the ocean and then return a year later to spawn again.
Could your friend have been fishing for summer runs? Maybe. Are there winter run fish in the Ump? Maybe...

After spending far too many days, weeks, months, and years observing the ladder at Winchester, I can positively say there are no winter runs on the N Umpqua.
Unless you count the bruisers nates (many hi teens, and some 20+) that start to show around mid November and go until the end of Feb to mid March.
Man do I miss those days...

They have a winter run on the north. Unless you think catching chrome fish in February are summers

I believe they have seperate counts for winters and summers at winchester , It's been awhile since I have been there . Check the Reg's for the fly only areas and bait and or lure restrictions . I know you can fish with artificials below rock creek , but I don't know about bait . Spinner's work pretty well up there . I've seen some really nice fish in Feb. At any rate there should be fishing to do at almost any time of the year as there are springers , summer steelhead , and the debated winter run , and also coho I believe . I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong . And the south umpqua has some pretty killer smallmouth I hear

It's true, summers and winters are counted seperately. There is a springer run, a summer steel run, cohos, and the urban legend winter steel run.
No fall 'nooks hit the North, but the South does have a small run that is fighting for existence. The South is closed to all angling during the fall 'nook run, but re-opens in time for the winter steel season.
Artificials and bait are allowed on the North, below Rock Creek deadline.

haha no winter run. I have no idea what all those people are doing fishing up the north umpqua during the dead of winter. I was just at the fish ladder this morning watching some winters try and up the dam.
