What do you guys think of putting a racing engine in a older style bug...
My friend classified it like this using the alphabet "a" being the worse and "Z" being the best
the engine right now is like a "C" and the one that might be put in is like a "W"
the engine is in the back...
someone said it would flip itself and i said it wouldnt if you had a couple sandbag in the front
What do you guys think??
Thanks Greg

Greg, people have been hot rodding bugs for years. Realitvely cheap and they are simple to work on. They won't flip all the way over but a hot one can snatch the front wheels off the ground. For a daily driver you'll want to keep it mild so it's dependable.

Caveman put a Porsche engine in a "67" baja bug. He wasn't popping wheelies, but he was quick on the mud flats!

It was a pretty common swap to put in a Porsche engine, in fact it bolts right in. But it sounds like you're talking about a V8, which would require a LOT of modifications to the body and drivetrain. No they wont flip, but they sure can pull wheelies off the line.

I like it Depends on if this is going to be a street car or strip car. If it's a street car, most likely he won't be driving around with slicks on, therefore not having enough traction to do a wheelstand. He can always add wheelie bars. Back in the day, I used to do some street racing in the Renton area. One of my buddies lived down there and I would do down there on the weekends. There was a bug with a 455 Olds motor in the back All you could see was a little air cleaner in the rear window. The thing was scarey fast, and would pull wheelies.

Had a nice street bug when I was in high school. Bug motor, nicely built 1835 cc, massive carbs, cam, beefed-up close ratio tranny and a seriously strong clutch.
Smoked more than a few Mustangs and Camaros up to about 105, which was when my car's gearing started to run out. You just have to choose your course...I never chose a place where you could hit 100 before you had to make a turn or two.
Yeah, built bugs can be a bit light up front. Mine had a one-piece tilt 'glass front end and aluminum fuel tank so it was extra light...it had very little trouble lifting the nose with good tires. The weight distribution is good back there though...great hook up. Far better traction than the imports you see today with front wheel drive (there's a reason they have to put those ridiculous tires on the import racers). With the bugs, the more the thing rears back, the better the hook up.
I'd be curious to find out what he plans on putting in there. Some good VW motors out there, and like Klick mentioned, reasonably easy to pay for and work on.

Used to be a VW nut in my younger years, drove and raced them all at one time or another. There is no way you can flip out a bug, it smacks the sheetmetal, bumper or engine long before it will flip. If it's going to be used on the street, watch your compression ratio, as it's a big heat generator and go to the Gene Berg site to see what really has shown to work over the years. Many add ons to the bug in fact have negative effects. Gene has tested it all and can put you on the right course for both performance and longevity.

I'll second the snow comment...'cept mine had stright headers and no heater manifold (so no heat in the car). Winters were spent with the windows down a ways and a scraper kept handy for the inside of the windshield. Lost my in that car in the middle of winter on a back road...snowin' like hell...and managed to get caught by the cops. Good times....fond of them bugs for some reason.
